Days Ahead of Fighting for Nation’s Pride, Justin Thomas Makes a Bold ‘Hostile’ Confession About Ryder Cup’s Environment

The 2023 Ryder Cup is approaching the golf world with swiftness. The tournament at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club seems all set to host the top 12 players from both teams, expecting yet another skillful display at the biennial bash. With the US team hopeful of overcoming the 30-year-long title drought on European soil, few team members sat down to drop insights into their mindset before the play.

Hosting the PGA Tour professionals Collin Morikawa, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, and Justin Thomas, Golf Week brought forth answers to wide-ranging questions. Thomas, in particular, discussed something that can influence the outcome of the contest in a big way. Is he worried?

During the interaction with Golf Week, in sponsorship with Rolex, the US Team members were posed various questions surrounding the much-awaited team event. One question particularly touched upon the last success of the team at the 2022 Presidents Cup. The query diverted toward the confidence of the team in their capability to defend the title on the Italian greens.

It was the Ryder Cup expert Justin Thomas who answered the question. The golfer started by explaining how most members of the team are coming into the tournament with no major experience on the “overseas” greens. Calling it a “new challenge for them”, he drew an analogy of the tournament to the golf courses and commented about adapting to it.

He further added about the competition in view and said, “I know no matter what the makeup of the two teams is, it’s going to be extremely difficult and a friendly but hostile environment.” Referring to the passionate fans, he mentioned embracing the crowd and the battle that everyone awaits.

The golfer star appeared confident. Yet, he was quick to add about not claiming a “coming home” comment over the title, keeping in focus the home advantage the European side has. JT was not the first one to speak about the expectations from the European greens. Prior to him, his compatriot Collin Morikawa had expressed his projection of the course.

After JT, Collin Morikawa reveals his expectations from the Ryder Cup course

During a recent radio interview with siriusxmpgatour, American professional Collin Morikawa divulged his outlook on the first hole in Rome. Keeping the tricky course in mind along with the unfamiliarity of the greens, the 26-year-old seemed hardly bothered. He, taking inspiration from his previous performances, looks to have an even better experience on the foreign greens.

Similar to the senior teammate, even Morikawa credited the audience for creating an unmatchable atmosphere on the course. While he addressed the inclination of the spectators toward the Europeans, the golfer continued to stress the factor of deriving energy from them nonetheless.

His answer highlighted the positivity of having a good crowd around. However, the last point that the golf star mentioned was the aim to grab the trophy on the opposition’s home ground, sending across a message of dominance.
