From Beaverton to Los Angeles. From a giant to a relatively new brand in the golfing circle. The golf world saw a surprising start to the year when Nike witnessed its first high-profile exit in 2024, with none other than Jason Day. What’s more, he had gone ahead to partner with Malbon Golf, all the while expressing dissatisfaction with the Swoosh’s attire.

But it seems that the world of golf does not have a similar take on the PGA Tour pro’s choice of clothing. Moreover, savage in its admonishment, the community went ahead to comment on the Australian’s dress, nothing shy of trolling the newest Malbon Golf partner during his appearance at The Sentry!

A post was shared by NUCLR GOLF on its X handle showcasing a video of Day teeing off a golf ball in a par-4 hole at the ongoing event. It was initially uploaded by a golf enthusiast who posted it with the caption, “Jason Day’s pants are coming with a vengeance to take golf Twitter back from Jersey Jerry.”

Was that it? Well, no, not even close. The recording that was shared consists of the commentary of the broadcast as well. Surprisingly, when the camera falls on the 36-year-old, the commentator talks of the golfer “and his pants,” while poking fun at the style, especially its “pleats,” as he teased, “There’s just so much fabric.”

Despite pulling off a scintillating first day at The Sentry in Maui with a score of 8-under 65 on Thursday, all the attention fell on the professional’s baggy dark pants that sported white dots. Unfortunately, the commentator wasn’t alone in his jab, as many in the community took to the tweet to express their displeasure while making fun of the style of clothing.

The Australian might not have imagined how his new partnership on the course with a new apparel company would garner this much attention. But then again, he did change his style to stand out to stand out from the crowd of golfers who, apparently, used to don the same outfit as him.

Day’s excess fabric sends the golf world into a frenzy

The responses ranged from those commenting on the amount of money paid to the athlete to wear the baggy pants to reactions making fun of the unique style of the Australian. Nevertheless, it seems that he isn’t off to a great start in terms of his attire.

Viktor Hovland had been dominating the headlines recently owing to his rumors of switching to LIV Golf and his split with coach Joe Mayo. However, why talk about that here, you ask? Well, a fan of the Norwegian professional went ahead to point out how the new style donned by Day might take some heat off him!

Many were visibly displeased and dissatisfied with the kind of style that the professional decided to sport on the Plantation Course at Kapalua in Maui. Moreover, a follower even dubbed watching him play with the baggy pants as nothing short of a bad thing.

There have been times that I’d be standing on the first tee and look over to see another golfer in essentially the same outfit as me,” said a frustrated Day when asked about the change to Malbon Golf. Well, he can now rest easy, as the shift did bring about a big change, even pushing many of his fans to take a not-so-subtle-jab at the style of pants.

The partnership with Nike amounted to seven years and $100 million. However, one can only suspect the amount to be much higher than that if the Australian made the switch to a relatively new brand in the golfing circle. A fan did point out exactly that!

A lot of his followers were waiting for the new style that would entail the Swoosh on the course. However, many came out stubborn in their view after witnessing one of their favorite golfers play in such a unique style of pants.

LIV Golf had been in the headlines and still continues to be, owing to the changes that they brought to the sport. Surprisingly, a fan indirectly pointed out how it’d have been better to follow the Saudi-backed league’s example rather than resorting to this.

The community was still able to see a different kind of style on the greens as opposed to the usual sense of flair that one witnesses on the course. Nevertheless, it all comes down to one’s personal choice. If the Australian is comfortable sporting the same, then there shouldn’t be a problem with his choice, right?
