As the PGA Tour Champions proceeds, the second event of the season is around the corner. After nine years of being played at Omni Tucson National, this year’s event is at a new venue, La Paloma Country Club in Tucson, Arizona. The tournament features a field size of 78 veteran players, including the reigning champion, David Toms, the 2022 Charles Schwab Cup winner, Steven Alker, and the 2022 Cologuard Classic champion, Miguel Angel Jimenez.

Along with the purse of a whopping $2.2 million – which is the same as 2023 – a lot of other things will also be at stake for the veteran golfers. The $2.2 million will be distributed among all the players since there is no cut. The standard payout percentages and distribution will be followed.

The winner’s share will be $330,000, equivalent to 15 percent of the overall prize pool. The runner-up will receive 8.8% of the total purse, amounting to $176,000. Here’s the position-wise breakdown of the total prize money.

The Irish professional golfer Padraig Harrington and the 2021 RBC Heritage winner Stewart Cink made their debuts this week in Tucson. The presence of esteemed figures, including ambassador of Cologuard Jerry Kelly and members of the World Golf Hall of Fame Fred Couples, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, and Colin Montgomerie, makes the event intriguing.

Another benefit of the event is that the earnings this week will count toward the Charles Schwab Cup points. Every dollar earned will lead to a regular season point, which will then contribute to the qualification process for the Charles Schwab Cup playoffs in 2024. At the end of the 2024 season, the top five players in the final rankings will receive portions of the $2.1 million bonus pool in the form of annuities.

Other than the lucrative price pool, points, and the display of exceptional golfing skills, the event also has a few other interesting philanthropic elements.

Since 2018, the event organizers have donated over $3.1 million to support youth sports and raise awareness for initiatives aimed at preventing colon cancer in Southern Arizona. Golf enthusiasts who contribute non-perishable food items or make a minimum donation of $5 to the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona will get a complimentary entry to the tournament on Saturday.
