Is Tiger Woods' era of dominance officially over, or can he still make a comeback?

The golfer’s 14-over par wasn’t enough for him to tee off on Moving Day. Yes, Tiger Woods had, unfortunately, missed the cut at the 2024 Open. The athlete carded a total of 11 bogeys, 3 birdies, and 3 double bogeys, all of which were seen by the fans through the coverage. This is exactly what pushed the 48-year-old into an even more embarrassing situation, according to a famous analyst.

A new episode of the Dan Patrick Show was released on his YouTube channel on July 19. The sportscaster, during the same, pointed out how the sport and its media focus so much on Woods that every one of his mistakes is watched closely by the community. Interestingly, he revealed how the same thing happened at Royal Troon, resulting in the embarrassing moment of not making the weekend’s round, which was even more mortifying.

“Every shot’s on TV,” highlighted Patrick while questioning the existence of other sports that focus extensively on a struggling athlete. “Because people are curious about Tiger,” reasoned the analyst, “Golf knows Tiger equals ratings even if he’s struggling the first two days, doesn’t make the cut, you’re going to show him.” Interestingly, despite missing the cut for the last two majors, the Hall of Famer’s group, including Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay, was the one that was featured on Thursday.

The radio personality then mentioned how the 15-time major champ has it hard enough on the greens to even play at the weekend if he does qualify for the same, owing to poor health. Even so, Patrick conveyed his desire to watch the athlete on the screen regardless: “Do I want to see him struggle out there? No, but I still wanna see him play even if he’s… not going to make the cut.”

Well, that is exactly what the PGA Tour, the R&A, and its partners, including CBS Sports, did. “He can’t hide, and if he’s struggling, they’re showing it,” said the host of the show, underscoring how no other sport has fans who wants to see an athlete even if “he’s getting roughed up.” Patrick also didn’t shy away from mentioning how the TV executives, directors, talent, and producers want the 82-time PGA Tour champ out there: “No matter what, they show every single shot even if he’s not in contention.” But in the end, although the sportscaster did dish out the brutal truth, he made sure to express his faith in the golfer’s abilities.

Golf analyst expresses belief in Tiger Woods

“All it takes is one moment, one weekend,” said Dan Patrick as he disclosed how there is every chance for Tiger Woods to emerge victorious again. He even recounted 60-year-old Tom Watson finishing T2 at the 2009 Open Championship in Turnberry and 46-year-old Jack Nicklaus winning the Masters in 1986 while alluding to the 48-year-old’s chances. “This is how you have to think,” conveyed the analyst.

What about Woods? Well, he certainly was hopeful of getting better in the future. “I’m going to just keep getting physically better and keep working on it,” disclosed the 1997 Masters champ as he revealed his plans to play at the Hero World Challenge and the PNC Championship in December. One thing is for sure, his fans would also be “looking forward to it,” just like the golfer expressed after the Open Championship exit!
