The penultimate FedEx Cup playoff has finally concluded, and it was as dramatic as ever. Winning is indeed a great feeling for any golfer after grinding on the course for 4 days, and when that win sets a career record, and a course record, it becomes even more special. Not only just for the golfer but for the other members of the golf fraternity as well!

Recently, Viktor Hovland became one such player to mark his second win of the 2023 season in Illinois by bagging $3.6 million out of the $20 million. On the way to his triumph, the golfer set the record, and just some moments later, he made a startling revelation about a shot he played on the back nine.

Viktor Hovland discloses an intrinsic detail about his record-shattering round

The Norwegian star started his final round in the second position. He was three shots behind England’s own Matt Fitzpatrick and Scottie Scheffler. But as he started the final round, he found his rhythm and started climbing to the top of the leaderboard. 

He claimed the top of the leaderboard during the second half of his round at the Olympia Fields’s North Course. He was just unstoppable during those nine holes. Soon after the celebrations, the golfer made his way to the media room where he disclosed some intrinsic details about his birdie on the 14th hole. 

Referring to his 14th-hole shot as one of the most memorable ones, he said that he pulled his tee shot left on 14 and had a pretty tricky lie in there in the rough. At that moment, he told his caddie Shay Knight that “9-iron’s not going to get there. I’m going to have to just hit an 8-iron and it’s going to come out low and hopefully, it releases out the perfect amount.” 

He continued and said that as soon as he hit the shot, all he could say was “Go, go, go, go.” The golfer did not know where it landed but he saw it trickling up there and then he watched it go to a foot. Summing up his feelings about the shot and the day he had, he said, “So, it was just one of those days and that was may be the perfect shot that encapsulated the whole round.”

It appears that things are definitely going Hovland’s way with this victory, and him making it to the European team for his second Ryder Cup appearance. Let us dive in to find out a bit more about the record-setting final round of Viktor Hovland that helped him clinch the victory. 

A glimpse into Hovland’s record final round 

What started as a routine final round for the PGA Tour pro, turned out to be the best round of his career. The Norwegian golfer wanted nothing but perfection, and to do so, he made birdies on seven holes out of the nine in the second half of his round. He carded a 61 on the scoreboard to set the career and course record. 

The stellar score was his career’s lowest score and at the same time, the final round score was the lowest score ever carded at Olympia Field. The previous record of the lowest score of 62 was embarked upon by Sam Burner and Max Homa on the previous days of the championship. Not only the aforementioned two records but the golfer’s final aggregated score of 17 under was the tournament record as well.
