Will the lava fields at Black Desert Golf Course be the ultimate test for PGA pros?

PGA Tour heads to yet another event of the Fall season. This time it is a new event, and 2024 marks its debut. The event in question is the Black Desert Championship 2024. Starting October 10th, the 4-day tournament will feature most of the highest ranked at Sanderson except the winner, Kevin Yu, all the other top 6 players, within 2 points from victory will participate in Black Desert. That means we will witness Beau Hossler, Keith Mitchell, Lucas Glover, Alex Smalley, Bud Cauley, and 127 more pros go head-on to fight for the championship.

The fight at the $7.5 million event will not be straightforward. Why do we say that? Well, because of the event’s venue. This tournament marks the PGA Tour’s iconic return to Southern Utah in 61 years. The venue for the contest is the Black Desert Golf Course, and it is as dangerous as it could get. From lava fields to picturesque backgrounds, this one truly has it all!

Significantly, the Black Desert Resort Golf Course at Utah offers a variety of pars for its pursuers. The holes here ensure that every round is as grueling, intense, and exciting as it could get. The 71-par course covers 7,200 yards loaded with some of the most interesting features that make it enjoyable for players and fans alike. If there is one intriguing but dangerous feature that will loom over everyone, there are lava fields surrounding the course. Yes, you heard that right.

Despite the breathtaking landscape of the Black Desert Resort Golf Course, the players, workers, and fans are asked to avoid walking alongside the holes. The craggy black lava is the result of the Santa Clara eruptions around 30,000 years ago, having engulfed the calming fields and added a unique characteristic to the course.

As rightly quoted, by Andrew Hartsock of the Golf Course Management magazine, it’s a ‘Lava-ffair’ between the tournament and its fans. The golf course is constructed on a bed of black basalt rock. The person behind designing the intricate details of the immaculate field in such a dangerous environment is the late Tom Weskopf. Unfortunately, Weskopf couldn’t witness his vision come to life as he passed away in August 2022, before the opening of the course.

Phil Smith took over the project and ensured Weskopf’s last creation was perfected by 2023. While the players will be excited to play on the course, the fans have a lot more to look forward to at the Black Desert Championship.
