Is the absence of Thomas and Spieth a sign of trouble for the future of American golf?

Last year was a bit different. Different in the sense that the U.S. team boasted a unique, albeit controversial, roster at the Ryder Cup. Any guesses why that was? Many were left unsatisfied owing to Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth’s inclusion. But then you would expect the opposite effect this time around, or perhaps a team that is not united. Well, you would be wrong on both accounts. But don’t take our word for it—take Brian Harman’s! Since he will be able to draw quite a clear picture of it.

The golfer was spotted in an interview ahead of the upcoming biennial event when a couple of curious questions were dished out at him. The interviewer asked him whether there was any difference from the Ryder Cup and expressed interest in the vibes in the team room this year. Harman’s reply? “You’ve still sort of got that team vibe.”

“I think they would all be totally different,” replied the pro as he excitedly added, “I’m enjoying myself just as much as the Ryder Cup. These are a thrill to play in.” Surprisingly enough, the golfer boasted a good record at the 2023 edition of the tournament, winning two matches. With such excitement, he’s surely aiming for an even better performance at the upcoming Presidents Cup.

Now, if you were curious about the vibes in the team room, it does seem a bit different from last year, all thanks to the new faces, according to Brian Harman. “You bring all the new faces in and you try and catch them up to speed,” added the 37-year-old, alluding to the likes of Russell Henley, Sahith Theegala, and Keegan Bradley. Meanwhile, the first two golfers appear to have impressed Harman quite a bit. “They’re awesome,” said the pro. “They’re great players, and they’re great in the locker room too.”

But what about Bradley? “I had never played on a team with Keegan,” replied the athlete, adding how unsure they were about how Bradley would react to the new team vibe. Harman also recounted his 2023 experience, saying, “We play all year together, so we know each other, but you never really know how everyone is going to react when they get in a situation like this, same as I was last year.” Interestingly, 2023 was the first time Brian Harman teed off at the Ryder Cup.

Brian Harman and his 2023 Ryder Cup stats

At the Ryder Cup, the American golfer emerged victorious twice. The first win came against Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka, defeating the duo 4&2 while paired with Max Homa. The second, however, came against Tommy Fleetwood and Nicolai Hojgaard in the Saturday Fourballs. He did so while being paired with the likes of Homa (again!) all the while carding a win, 2&1.

What about the rest? Unfortunately, Brian Harman faced defeat in his other match, a singles event against Tyrrell Hatton. But no worries—the athlete seems to have moved on from the loss and is thrilled about the upcoming Presidents Cup: “Everyone has been fantastic. Everyone is eager to play and ready to go.” Will he turn that exhilaration into a victory? We can only wait and see!
