The Wyndham Championship is the last chance for the players to acquire a spot at the next week’s FedEx Cup playoffs. Hence the golfers who are not in the top 70 are fighting tooth and nail to somehow enter the top 70 positions and keep their season alive. And for PGA Tour Pro Billy Horschel, this is turning out to be a mammoth task.

Though he is faring well at the event, this season was no less than a nightmare for Horschel as he has helplessly witnessed a slump in his FedEx rankings. At the press-conference after the third round at Wyndham, Horschel made the revelation about what caused his fall on the charts.

The season of 2023 hasn’t turned out that great for the Florida-born golfer. Last year Billy won his seventh title on the PGA Tour by winning the Memorial Tournament but this season he hasn’t been able to notch up any victory. Last week, he did perform well at the 3M Open and finished T13 but that didn’t do any big miracles for him.

He has entered this week 116th on the FedEx rankings which is three up from his 119th rank of last week but is still far away from finding an entry in the playoffs next week. The Wyndham Championship is his last hope to undo the damage done this season which according to Horschel happened because his own clubs were betraying him.

At the press conference on Saturday, Horschel confessed that it was at the US Open in June that Billy realized that his Titleist irons were 2-3 degrees too upright. He soon worked on them with Michael Neff on the Gears 3-D system which is an optical motion tracking system that analyses sports-specific skills.

According to Horschel: “That made a massive difference.” The old pattern of his gears was getting in the way of good play for him. Things have since improved for the golfer.

Restructuring his irons has helped Horschel improve his game

Speaking about how the new form is making a positive difference in his game, Horschel said, “Recently we just realized that the more width and shorter I can keep it, the better the club stays out in front of me. So simple thing is keeping more width and keeping it more out in front of me in the backswing, which allows the club to stay more out in front of me on the downswing so I can hit my cut easier.” The positive impact indeed reflects in his recent performances.

He wrapped up the second round on Friday with an 8-under 62 and was 11th on the scoreboard. On Saturday, he did much better and shot to the top of the leaderboard. And if he continues this performance and win the tournament, then Horschel could definitely earn a ticket for the playoffs next week.
