As the year’s second major is underway, fans are eagerly looking forward to watching the likes of Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, and Jordan Spieth taking the field at New York’s Oak Hill Country Club. From past winners to heavyweights from LIV, the 105th edition of the PGA Championship boasts a stacked field this year.

Ahead of the event, however, a “major” fact involving Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods has now come to the surface. But how did golf fans react to this jaw-dropping piece of information? Let’s find out!

Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods have often been touted as sporting rivals and for a very good reason. When combined, the pair has a total of 21 major victories between them, with the last one coming as recently as 2021.

Woods, who turned pro in 1996, has gone on to achieve many unsurpassable feats, including 15 major wins. With his 2019 Masters win, he became the 2nd-oldest golfer to win at Augusta after Jack Nicklaus. On the other hand, 6-time major winner Mickelson scripted history at the PGA Championship two years ago when he became the oldest golfer ever to win a major at 50 years and 11 months. Per @flushingitgolf, their recent major wins have also helped the golfers trump considerably younger players, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth.

McIlroy and Spieth have been mainstays in the World’s Top 10 for quite some time now. However, both have gone surprisingly without major wins in the past couple of years, with Spieth’s last coming in 2017.  World No. 3 McIlroy has been even less fortunate as he last clinched one almost a decade ago.

Fans on Instagram couldn’t help but express disbelief at how both Woods and Mickelson have won majors since their younger golfing compatriots last did. Some even put the new generation on blast, with the Irishman having to bear the brunt of it.

Golf fans take a swipe at McIlroy’s nine-year-long major drought

As the biggest names in the sport begin their pursuit of the Wanamaker trophy, McIlroy and Spieth are definitely two golfers that everyone will be looking out for.  After all, a major win has evaded them for several years.

The saying…’the cream always rises to the top’… is very true,” opined one about Woods and Mickelson’s sensational feat. “This is crazy…and gold,” read another comment from a disbelieving fan. Another believes that the highly competitive nature of the fields is the reason behind their current fate, saying, “Fields these days are stacked with some serious talent. If you aren’t on top of all aspects of your game, somebody’s gonna do it better than you!

Many aimed jibes at former World No. 1 McIlroy, whose last major win came nine years ago in 2014. “I’ve won the same amount of majors as Rory since 2015,” wrote one. “Jordan’s won three majors since Rory last did…,” commented another golf enthusiast. World No. 10 Spieth, who is a part of the field despite his recent wrist injury, has an opportunity to complete a career grand slam by winning the PGA Championship title this week.

Rory is by far the most overrated golfer of all time he broke on to scene young with success I will give him that but I don’t think you can go an entire decade without winning a real tournament and be labelled a GOAT,” said another fan. In his last major appearance at the Augusta National, the 34-year-old failed to win a green jacket once again after shockingly missing the cut.
