Following Bryson’s and many other golfers’ moves to the Saudi-funded LIV Golf, their participation in this year’s Ryder Cup has been in jeopardy. Team Europe’s Henrik Stenson was terminated from his captain role and also removed from the team for joining the Breakaway Tour. However, Team USA’s captain Zach Johnson recently claimed at the Zurich Classic that ‘no decisions have been made’ regarding the participation of LIV golfers in the biennial event.

Following the American captain’s comments, Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka expressed their desire to represent the American flag in the Ryder Cup later this year in Italy. However, the LIV duo now has Bryson DeChambeau accompanying them to be considered among the captain’s picks for the event this year. During his 1-over-par second round on Friday, DeChambeau decided to sustain the stormy weather conditions by using a souvenir from the Ryder Cup.

While everyone used a regular umbrella to avoid getting wet in the rain, the Scientist sported a Team USA umbrella. Perhaps DeChambeau was sending a message to Zach Johnson that he is willing to compete at the Marco Simone Golf Club for the American Team later this year. And with his impressive first round, it won’t be a shocker if Bryson does make the captain’s pick.

Nonetheless, while his fellow LIV defector Henrik Stenson has been stripped of his duties, how is the American Team providing opportunities to the lucrative Tour players? Moreover, aren’t Bryson DeChambeau and other LIV Golf stars suspended by the PGA Tour? So how are they allowed to compete in the Ryder Cup?

Though the participation of LIV Golf players depends on the team captains, they are legally allowed to compete in the biennial event. Since the Ryder Cup is administered by the PGA of America and Ryder Cup Europe and not by the PGA Tour, the LIV players won’t be barred from competing, considering that they are still members of the PGA until 2024.

The PGA of America also coordinates the ongoing PGA Championship. While the faith of American LIV Golf players lies in the hands of Team USA’s captain Zach Johnson, the participation of European golfers is still in doubt. Nonetheless, maybe more golfers can pull out a Ryder Cup umbrella over the weekend at Oak Hill Country Club to send a message to their respective team captains.
