The hype around DeChambeau was surely very high. Furthermore, The Scientist surely stepped up to all the expectations and put in a great performance to finish second on the first day at Oak Hill. While there were already many eyes on him, his performance created more headlines. However, the LIV star grabbed more limelight as he shared his disappointment with the sport after the first round.

No longer the incredible bulk, DeChambeau used all his speed and strength to showcase his talent. The 29-year-old posted a score of 4-under 66 and finished the day in second place, just behind Eric Cole, who has yet to play the last four holes. Following the round, the American pro attended a press conference in which he opened up about his tiresome journey to date and the tough times he has faced with the sport, answering a question about times when he “hated golf.”

“I was disappointed,” said the scientist. “I don’t know if hate is the right word. It was more of just being frustrated and disappointed, like, I’ve achieved this; why can’t I just do it every day?” You know, that’s what we all think out here. But it’s definitely a game you can’t conquer.”

The most important aspect of the conversation was this enormous declaration of the one-time major winner’s actual feelings. DeChambeau’s remarks are unmistakably a reference to his injury days, when he was sidelined for a full season. Those difficult circumstances have undoubtedly had a deeper impact on the golf pro.

DeChambeau is renowned for his distinctive style of play, which includes the use of single-length irons and the application of scientific ideas to enhance his swing and technique. But that didn’t seem to have helped him too much at the past PGA Championships. The 29-year-old has a mixed record at the major, with a T33 finish in 2017 and missing the cut the following years in both 2018 and 2019.

Fortunately, the former major champion played far better at the 2020 PGA Championship, tying for fourth place. However, in 2021, his performance fell again, and he had to settle for the 38th spot on the leaderboard. In 2022, DeChambeau missed the competition because of his surgery to remove a cyst in one of his maxillary sinuses, and now he returns for redemption!
