Jordan Spieth hasn’t had a memorable PGA Championship so far. The 29-year-old is languishing at the bottom half of the table after the end of his third round, with hopes of a fourth major championship long erased.
However, Spieth’s performance has been harshly impacted by a nagging wrist injury. While he has been quiet about his persistent issue, Saturday’s five-over-par forced him to make a clear statement regarding his troubles.

Eleven years after turning pro in his sophomore year, Spieth has enjoyed a successful golf career. He has won three of the four majors the sport has to offer, with the only remaining title being the PGA Championship.
Yet it looks to have evaded him this year too. It all started on a bad note for Spieth, who came into this year’s PGA Championship with a confirmed wrist injury. Indeed, his performances have taken a dip over the week, with a score of six-over-par not doing him any favors.
But Spieth has finally decided to come clean on his injury, revealing the details of his concerns and his way around them. “I’m doing, obviously, a lot of recovery that I’ve been doing every day for the last, well, I guess eight days now since I injured it – no, sorry, 14 days now,” he claimed.
How did the injuries affect Jordan Spieth’s game at the PGA Championship?
The 2015 FedEx Cup champion has been second-best in his game at Oak Hills all week. Evidently, it had something to do with his wrist troubles. “But on [the] course, there’s been a couple [of] scenarios where I bailed out of a couple [of] shots that if it weren’t a factor, I wouldn’t have, and unfortunately those shots did affect my score,” he said, justifying his finish towards the bottom half of the leaderboard.

“It’s just when you start getting bunker lips and stuff like that, and you’ve got to really flick under a flop shot or a bunker shot, I had that today where I just don’t have the confidence in it not making it worse, so I just bail a little bit,” he added. Clearly, his injury has not only affected the golf pro’s performance, but also his confidence. It makes him second-guess himself out of fear of a miss!
In addition to his injury, Spieth claimed that the lack of time for preparation and vulnerability dented his confidence for the major championship. “I would have liked to have had two or three weeks off before this event just to feel like I got prepared. It wasn’t really a wrist thing as much it was just a lack of preparation,” he said.
