Scottie Scheffler's meltdown: Justified frustration or unacceptable behavior for a pro golfer?

The 2024 season has been a rollercoaster for Scottie Scheffler, from winning his second major to getting arrested during the second major to making the country proud with his Olympic win. Scheffler has frequently found himself in the headlines, but this time around, he caught the attention of fans, and not in the best way.

The opening round of the first FedEx Playoff tournament took place a few hours ago. The World No. 1 was paired with Xander Schauffele around 1:45 p.m. EDT. When his tee shot on the 13th hole landed in a bunker, he was at a 4-under par, approximately 185 yards away from the pin. His second shot on the par-4 hole found more sand and this time it got trapped to the right of the hole.

NUCLR Golf took to their official X account and shared the video of Scheffler’s third shot on the 13th hole. As he hit the shot, Scottie Scheffler tossed his bomb 13 feet away from the hole. This led to frustration, resulting in yet another outburst by a PGA Tour player on the course. He ended up slamming his club into the sand as his ball landed on the green. The 13th hole ended up being the chink in the armor on the 28-year-old’s opening day scorecard, costing him his bogey-free opening round. No wonder Scheffler was not happy and the caption of the tweet perfectly captured the two-major champs little outburst as it stated, #WATCH Scottie Scheffler (former Inmate #00654436) is PISSED!”

Nonetheless, he is still tied for the 5th position on the leaderboard, with Xander Schauffele and five other players. They are two strokes away from Chris Kirk, who will enter the Friday round with a solo win. Scheffler, who has rarely been so aggressive on the course, managed to grab the attention of the golf community one more time. However, this time around, Scheffler did not find support from his fans for his actions.

Golf enthusiasts express disapproval of Scheffler’s club slam

This is not the first time this season that Scheffler has expressed his frustration on the course. The Olympic medalist had outbursts at the Phoenix Open and the Arnold Palmer Invitational as well.  One fan seems to have been keeping track of everything and went ahead and commented, “Why does Scottie hate being on the @PGATOUR so much! 😂”.

Have an interesting take?

It’s no secret that the PGA Tour’s format for the FedEx Cup Playoffs isn’t Scheffler’s favorite. It was the 28-year-old himself who expressed these feelings at the presser in Memphis. His recent words led one fan to bring LIV Golf into the equation, given its comparatively easy format. “Move to LIV confirmed”, they wrote.

Scottie Scheffler is otherwise known to be an extremely calm person. Even his parents, Scott and Diane, who have been his biggest supporters, once said that among the four children that they have, he is the coolest-tempered, and also the most collected. They even stated that whenever something happens, it is always he who calms everyone down in the chaos. This side of Scheffler was indeed a rare site to be seen. One of them commented, “I don’t like this side of him”.

Back in May, during the second major, news of World No. 1’s arrest left the golf world in a state of shock. He was charged with a felony due to second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, and reckless driving. Ultimately, the charges against him were dropped, reaffirming his positive image and reputation. However, one fan chose to revisit those not-so-nice memories of May and took a jab at the 28-year-old, saying, “Maybe the arrest thing wasn’t so out of character”.

Well, it is not just Scottie Scheffler with the outbursts and comments. Earlier at the same PGA Championship, Brian Harman had a disappointing tee shot on the third hole during the second round. He expressed frustration, like Scheffler, by hurling his golf club on the ground. However, he was not quite a pro at it and did not realize that he had to throw it far away from his body. The result? The iron hit the turf and bounced back at him. The butt of the club hit his face.

This is not all. Even the defending champion of the St. Jude Championship, Lucas Glover, clearly stated last year that he was not happy about the changes in the old format. The number of players that can play in the playoffs decreased from 125 to 70, and he was not quite happy about it.

Taking to all these reactions of the PGA Tour players, one of them bluntly stated, “Look at these petulant and unhappy PGAT players.”
