It has been almost a month since the 44th edition of the Ryder Cup, and the scenes from the tournament are still fresh. Other than the ‘No Hat Cantlay controversy, there was another big controversy that made the event rise to the top of the headlines. If anybody doesn’t remember it, here is a refresher: Brawl between Rory McIlroy and Joe LaCava, which then extended to Marco Simone’s parking lot between the Irish golfer and Justin Thomas’ caddie, Jim Bones Mackay. The interaction between LaCava and McIlroy attracted a lot of attention, and then the heated discussion between the golfer and JT’s caddie, Mackay, in the parking lot went extremely viral as well.

Well, coming to the aftermath of the fiasco, it seems that there is a lot of bad blood between McIlroy and everyone who was directly or indirectly involved in the feud. Why, you may wonder? The reason it appears so is because it recently came to light that the Northern Irishman let go of a very good cross-sports investment opportunity alongside Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth. Let us unravel the mystery of this missed opportunity together!

Recently, it came to light that after his F1 investment, Rory McIlroy also had the chance to invest in the Leeds United Football Club, but he refused to do so. The reason that the former world number one revealed for passing on the opportunity is that he has been a Manchester United fan all his life, so it did not seem fit for him to invest in the rival football club.

But is this reason the whole truth? Well, it is. The reason that he did not wish to invest in Leeds United is because he adores Manchester United and has grown up cheering for them. It did not sit right with the golfer to invest in the rival club, as it could curb his opportunity to invest in MU Club.

McIlroy spoke with the BBC and said he would like to own even a 0.0001% share of the club, and if he gets any other opportunity to invest in his favorite and adored football club, he would definitely look into it. McIlroy’s talk with the BBC helped prove all the speculations about being a part of the Leeds Club with Justin Thomas after the brawl he had with the latter’s caddie in Rome during the Ryder Cup.

McIlroy’s dream to invest in Manchester United may soon come true, as the Glazer family, who bought Manchester United for nearly £800 million in 2005, announced in 2022 that they were thinking of selling the club. Although Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani withdrew from the deal and was the other highest bidder, British businessman Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos Group may be looking for a 25% stake in the club.

Whether or not McIlroy’s wish to invest in Manchester United comes true or not, he definitely does not hold any grudges against Joe LaCava, Justin Thomas, and Jim Bones Mackay.

During the 2023 Ryder Cup, Patrick Canltay refused to wear a hat, and the reports stated that it was because golfers do not get paid to compete in the Ryder Cup. The controversy soon escalated when the No Hat thing became the basis for the argument of the on-course feud between McIlroy and Joe LaCava. While celebrating Cantlay’s birdie, Tiger Woods’ former caddie was in the line of the Irish golfer’s shot, and the caddie’s delay in moving led to the whole fiasco. The feud then extended to the parking lot when the 4X major winner went into a heated yet inaudible argument with Thomas’ caddie.

Recently, McIlroy also said that he had shared a very good bond with LaCava over the years, especially when he used to caddie for Woods. One moment of heat would not change his equation with the senior bagman. He revealed that on Sunday night, LaCava came to the European dressing room and drank and chatted with everyone. The golfer revealed that after the incident on Saturday night, he did not want to meet anyone on Sunday morning because he wanted to use the heated accident as fuel for the winning day. In the end, he revealed that now everything is fine and everyone is friends with each other.

If everyone is friends with everyone again, McIlroy sure did not let go of the Leeds United investment opportunity because of the bad blood between him and Thomas’ caddie. It’s only because of his wish to invest in his favorite club, Manchester United.
