A 20-year-old beats a field of players on the highest professional circuit in the sport of golf. Yes, we are talking about the recent victory that Nick Dunlap carded through what can be dubbed an amazing performance, no less at the American Express. This has enabled him to become the first amateur golfer in more than three decades to win an event on the PGA Tour, a feat that was last achieved by none other than Phil Mickelson.

However, many, including the LIV golfer, are not young anymore. Similar is the case with a lot of the other professionals who once, and still do to a certain capacity, dominate the game. But even so, the focus naturally falls on the new young guns that have risen in recent years, and, interestingly, it seems they are here to stay!

Dunlap’s recent win on the PGA Tour calendar has indubitably shed light on the fact that golf is slowly changing. And leading the change at the forefront is the group of young athletes in the game who have recently dominated the headlines of the game. Even Mickelson was quick to agree, as he took to his social media handle to congratulate the amateur on his historical win!

However, that’s not all he tweeted. The 53-year-old posted an update on his X handle (formerly known as Twitter) a day before the final round, predicting that the 20-year-old had a good chance of emerging victorious at the courses at PGA West in La Quinta, California.

Adding on, he also called out many young golfers of today, including the likes of Ludvig Aberg, Caleb Surratt, Min Woo Lee, Gordon Sargent, and Dunlap. He did so while dubbing the athletes as “the youngest and most talented group of players” he has ever seen. Moreover, he also expressed his belief that they would turn out to be nothing shy of a “force for decades” to come. It seems the 6X major champ has a good eye for people.

But, golfers such as Aberg making such an effect in the game can be attributed to certain causes that helped his rise in the same. Justifiably, it is natural for the fans to become curious as well about the reason as to why they are on an upward tangent in the sport. Enter PGA Tour University!

The PGA Tour University and the rise of young athletes

“A massive opportunity for the Tour to make an impact,” stated Brendan von Doehren, the Korn Ferry Tour’s senior director of tournament and membership affairs, while talking about the new program that came about in 2020. Well, was he right on the spot? The move has undoubtedly helped bridge the gap between college and professional golf.

Moreover, the new initiative helped the top collegiate golfers attain a chance to earn membership on the various developmental circuits, providing them with a guaranteed place to play following their careers in college. As per the university rankings, the top golfer following the end of the NCAA Championships would be given a PGA Tour card, while the ranks from 1–10 would be awarded membership on the KFT. Meanwhile, the rest, until T20, would be given the option to play on the PGA Tour Americas full-time.

What about Aberg? Well, it would be hard to deny the effect that the PGA Tour University has had on many, especially the Swedes. He was able to finish No. 1 on the rankings in 2023, making him the first player to earn a card via the same.

The talent that each young athlete boasts, coupled with such initiatives, does provide a stage for them to bloom early and successfully. But that’s not all. A development in the way they practice also lent a hand to their amazing skills on the greens.

The changing technology in the sport

Daniel Rapaport was right in tweeting about the same. He mentioned how the victory that Nick Dunlap, or the performance the various young golfers were able to dish out, was “the culmination of a youth movement in golf years in the making.” Continuing with his update, he highlighted the various developments in technology, including “advanced statistics,” “launch monitors,” “dialed-in equipment,” and “course-management strategy systems,” which, combined with “better instruction” and competitive college golf, have made the kids “very scary.”

He seems just about right in this matter. Nevertheless, this is not just limited to the PGA Tour. One can even see instances of the younger generation from the Saudi-backed league taking charge as well.

Is LIV Golf witnessing a similar situation?

25-year-old Joaquin Niemann was able to propel himself from the 87th position on the OWGR to the 64th place owing to his recent finishes. The Torque GC skipper was able to place himself at T4 in the Hero Dubai Desert Classic not too long ago, all the while winning the ISPS Handa Australian Open in December. Adding to the list of LIV golfers, Fireballs GC member David Puig, who is just 22 years old, was able to emerge victorious at the International Series held in Singapore in October 2023.
