Paul McGinley, a former European tour player, has made his stance clear about golfers being diversified on different tours. His stance in the past has been different about LIV PGA diversification but has recently taken a shift.

In the wake of the Ryder Cup selections, he made it clear that, as a former European team captain, he believes that if the players have switched to the LIV Golf League, they have made a choice for themselves, and now they should stick to it. However, more recently, his thought process seems to be changing.

The golfer with a quarter of a century’s experience is now taking a different stand. He strongly believes that diversifying the best layers is not an optimal situation. McGinley claims that doing so in fact leads to a diluted product being formed.

Additionally, the golf legend also went on to point out that some of the best players in the world are currently not playing on the PGA Tour. He stated that this harms the age-long reputation of the PGA Tour for having fostered the best golfers in the world.

Paul McGinley thinks it would be best if the top pros were all brought under one league where they could strive to harbor the strongest skills and have the best go up against the best in the world. And in line with this, while talking on the SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio, he said, “We need to find a way of unifying again.”

This stance from the former European Ryder Cup captain was rather unsettling, especially since his statements in the past about LIV and the PGA Tour reflected none of this recent sentiment!

The past stance of the former European Team Captain

In the recent past, McGinley has voiced concerns about the impact of the LIV Golf League on European golfers and their involvement in traditional tours like the European Tour and the Ryder Cup. He boldly stated that some European golf legends accepting lucrative deals from LIV Golf while continuing to play on traditional tours was a “greedy” and damaging practice. Additionally, he said, “I wouldn’t have done the LIV Tour, then come back and played the European Tour as well. I think that’s greedy. You can’t be on both buses.”

His past stance also highlighted the evolving landscape of the DP World Tour and suggested that LIV Golf’s influence has complicated matters such as Ryder Cup captaincy decisions and minimum event participation requirements that come along with player selection.

McGinley had been critical of LIV Golf’s financial harm to the European Tour. He believed that the players who have decided to move to another tour should now stick to it and maintain the segregation. Now, however, he is an advocate of unifying golfers for the greater good of the sport!
