Following a series of unfortunate events, Paul Casey seems to have withdrawn from the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play. Held at the Austin Country Club in Austin, Texas, the event provides for an interesting few days following the Players Championship. It is also only a few tournaments away from The Masters, which ultimately helps set the mood for the approaching major.
The event is also played in the match play format, usually seen during the Ryder Cup. Casey, along with over 60 other players, take the field every year.

Why did Paul Casey withdraw from the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play?
As mentioned above, Paul Casey has withdrawn from the ongoing event in Texas. This decision was a result of two painful days where Casey ended up conceding. Reports also stated that Casey’s problem was his back injury.
The 44-year-old started his event against Corey Conners but ended up leaving after two holes. He did undergo some temporary treatment and hoped to return against Alex Noren. Unfortunately, the pain and injury eventually caused Casey to concede for the second time and retire.
Furthermore, the decision was made on Thursday.

“The pain I’m feeling is in the lower back, left side, it’s like spasms and I saw Jason in the truck yesterday and he said your glutes are not firing which made me giggle,” Casey said. He further explained that it does happen when you are over 40, and results in pain and spasms up the back.
He was aware that playing further was not possible, but did express frustration over just giving it away to someone playing against him.
“I don’t know. I can’t go through [to the weekend] so I guess it’s like, what’s the point?”
The three-time PGA Tour winner revealed they did do what they can to try and play. His back was taped, iced and heated, but nothing seemed to work. Physiotherapy and drugs were also used. However, problems arose when his back troubled him even after the treatment.
“(I) started to feel it on the chipping green and then couldn’t get past a 9-iron (on the range)”.
