Which is better: LIV Golf or the PGA Tour? The question has been at the top for most people in the golf world. Most people believe that it is divided into leagues, with LIV Golf offering a fast-paced game-play, while the PGA Tour follows traditional golfing. There have been many golf analysts like Claire Roger who took sides with LIV Golf during the Drop Zone podcast, while others like Brandel Chamblee have opposed the new-age Saudi League.

However, all the critics are observing the incident from only one angle and sharing their thoughts on it. But, the American professional, Patrick Reed shared his opinion on how both leagues can be beneficial for golf, providing something new for the fans. Reed, who turned pro in 2011, had 9 victories, including a win at the Masters Tournament in 2018. In 2022, he switched to the Saudi-backed league and has been associated with it since.

Being a part of both leagues, he shared his views on both during an interview with Mirror UK. The interesting part of this is that he did not take the side of any league in particular. Instead, shared how both can be a great benefit for the game. During the interview, he said, “Hopefully we can just start focusing on golf rather than PGA Tour vs LIV or DP World Tour vs LIV and more about the guys vs the guys.”

Pointing to the fact that people have taken their side with the emergence of two leagues, making the game evolve. “Obviously some guys didn’t like that some guys jumped and played on a different league, but at the same time I think it has really helped grow the game of golf and showed a different side of it, LIV is different, it is trying to show a different side of golf,” Reed said.

He further backed the PIF League and pointed out how having different leagues could be beneficial. “We don’t need another league that is exactly like the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, Asian Tour. We are trying to bring the younger generation into golf. How do you do that? Add music, a team aspect, have it be faster, have it not last as long with a shotgun start, have the concerts. It shows a new side of golf and a newer age. I think golf needs both.” Catering to different audiences, and having two leagues can be a great way to make golf enjoyable for all.

Unlike the critics who took sides, Reed was looking at the bigger picture for the game and hence shared his thoughts about it. But other critics are still considering their picks as the ideal one for golf.

The comparison between the leagues has been present since the inception of LIV Golf in 2021. However, purists of the game always have something to say against the PIF-backed league. Brandel Chamblee, an American former professional, shared on X his views on the Saudi-backed league. He wrote, “LIV golf didn’t take personalities so much as those willing to sell their business for a discount. If you want to call that “personality” so be it, I call it greedy and short-sighted.” He went on to share further how Rahm and DeChambeau are not rivals for McIlroy and Scheffler, as history and game will offer rivalry with time.

After the Showdown, despite the loss of Team LIV Golf, Claire Rogers was seen taking the side of LIV. During the Drop Zone podcast, she said, “LIV was a winner.” After the great move on social media. She even said, “Hey look, we want to find peace in golf world.”

Apart from this, there are obviously the fans that have taken their own sides. The recent one is the TGL being broadcast on ESPN. For the same, fans were seen comparing it with LIV Golf, which has been struggling to get broadcasting rights in the US. On the other side, fans were quick to criticize TGL as being a direct copy of LIV Golf taking the side of LIV Golf.

The comparison and discussion between the leagues will not be ending anytime soon, not until we see the merger of both leagues or a close settlement. What are your thoughts on Patrick Reeds’ take? Is it really beneficial to have two different types of leagues in golf? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
