Golf is a fun sport until it turns into something that dictates your life instead of being the other way around. That is exactly what happened to a certain golfing enthusiast on the course. Unfortunately, too much time playing the sport inevitably marked the final straw in what was a struggling marriage. An amateur golfer was served with divorce papers on the greens.

A tweet was shared by NUCLR GOLF, which showcased a screenshot of a Reddit post. The post mentioned how a golfer went to a municipal course to play a round of golf alone. However, fate had other plans when he was paired with three other guys who never miss a Saturday round of golf. Even forgot that one of them had a birthday lunch to attend to, that too of his 13-year-old daughter.

Next? Well, the enthusiast kept delaying his leaving time from 9 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. until they finally reached the 18th hole at 1 p.m. Enter his wife, much to everyone’s surprise, with a Marshall along with the divorce papers. A huge altercation happens between the soon-to-be-divorced couple, causing the enthusiast to storm off after she departed.

Golf causing divorce? Is this the most ridiculous excuse you've ever heard or is there more to it?

Remember Rory McIlroy’s 2024 U.S. Open run? He was leading the scoreboard on the final day before succumbing to the LIV Golf Pro Bryson DeChambeau’s finesse gameplay. But that wasn’t all that caused his downfall. The Northern Irishman missed par putts at the par-4 16th and the par-4 18th at Pinehurst No. 2, leading to him shifting to T2.

A fan couldn’t help but respond while alluding to the situation that occurred at the municipal course; “Wow, life really knows how to throw curveballs—just when you think you’re wrapping up a round, reality hits you hard on the 18th green.” Another follower just hilariously commented, “It was probably the most magical ending to a round of golf of his life.”

Other users tried to link it to a similar occurrence. PGA Tour Pro Chris Couch has faced many challenges in his life. But one of the most hard-hitting instances came in 2005 when his wife served him with divorce papers after he scored a 68 in the first round. “I was playing on the Nationwide Tour at the time and was either No. 1 or 2 on the money list,” recounted the golfer, “She delivered divorce papers after I shot 68 in the first round, then I went out and made a 9 on the first hole the next day.” A user, meanwhile, was reminded of a similar situation and reacted, “Happened on Tour once also. Early 2000’s”

As per the law, there are two kinds of properties in a marriage, namely marital property and separate property. States usually follow one of the two ways to divide the former since it was items acquired during marriage. They do so via a 50/50 division or an equitable distribution, the latter of which is based on the needs of the people involved. A fan could only ask, albeit sarcastically, if the enthusiast’s equipment faced the same issue after getting served with the papers, “Did she take half of his clubs when she left?” while another didn’t find any surprise in the situation; “What a pathetic excuse for a dad.”

Truly an “unreal” yet bizarre set of events that took place at the municipal golf course, as pointed out by another user. Regardless, it did leave a lot of people, especially the enthusiast recounting the whole experience to be nothing short of perplexed!
