The WM Phoenix Open is set for a blockbuster finish on Sunday. While the tournament’s defending champion holds the aces, some of the willy old veterans aren’t far behind. Those include a certain Rickie Fowler, who has been gaining momentum for some time now. But what did he say about his struggles after his second-round heroics on Friday?

Rickie Fowler and his honest confession on struggles

The 34-year-old carded a 5-under 66 in the second round which propelled him within touching distance of a top-10 position. It’s been a long road for the popular golfer, who plummeted as low as 160th in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).

After his immense display, Fowler didn’t mince words about his comeback. “No one stays at the top,” he said. “You never stay at your best. You’re always going to have to deal with struggles and tough times. So it’s just part of being out here and part of the sport.”

Since losing his way in the sport, Fowler started working with premier golf instructor Butch Harmon. The partnership has shown signs of promise. The 2015 Players Championship winner tied for second at the Zozo Championship last year. Recently inducted into the Player Advisory Council for the 2023 season, he finished tied for eleventh place at the recently-concluded Farmers Insurance Open.

Who is leading at the WM Phoenix Open?

Fowler’s hot streak might help him catch up with the man leading the tournament. Defending champion, Scottie Scheffler, who enjoyed a breakthrough season last year, finished two strokes ahead of his closest challenger after the second day’s play.

The 26-year-old carded a three-under-par in the first round, before shooting a sensational 64 to stay clear of the rest of the field. Having recently lost out his eminent status as the World No. 1-ranked golfer, Scheffler would be looking to make amends to return to the top spot.
