Is the GOAT ready to retire, as many suggest? No, not at all! In the pre-tournament press conference of the 152nd Championship, Tiger Woods said he still has what it takes to win. “I’ll play as long as I can play, and I feel like I can still win the event,” said Woods. His words though did not match the kind of performance he put at the Royal Troon. So, in a way, fans are yet to witness the spark that made Woods the GOAT. The 82-time PGA Tour winner has had a streak of poor performance in the 2024 season so far, and it continued at The Open as well when he shot 14 over par. But that hasn’t discouraged the golfer from participating in new events!
After finishing dead last at T60 in the Masters Tournament, the golfer missed the cut at the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open. His performance in the first two rounds of the 2024 Open Championship also didn’t look promising. Despite poorly missing the cut at yet another major, Woods is not ready to back off! The odds are against him; his body is battered, and his game is struggling, but he still would be making another start this year, in December.
Last year, Tiger Woods promised fans he’d play one event every month. Was it an empty promise? Because it sure seems like it. In a recent X post by TWLEGION, the golf world got to know that its all-time favorite player will now be directly playing in the 2024 Hero World Challenge, an event hosted by the player himself. The event is set to take off five months away from now and will start in December.

“He needs to play smaller events and get more reps, simple as that,” said one user keeping in mind the fact that Woods only has been playing bigger events, and seems less than ideally ready for it. he needs to play regular Tour events to brush up his skills.
Another fan commented, “That’s a long time before we see him in competitive golf again. Not sure why he wouldn’t try play in October at some point?”, addressing the huge gap between the live action at The Open and the Hero World Challenge. The fan questioned that Woods could have played a few events in October, relatively smaller, to get the hang of the competitive greens like before, and his fans would have loved that too.
While some comments agreed with Colin Montogemerie’s words and said, “That’s why you shot +14 and missed the cut….play some damn golf… if your body honestly is that bad….retire man”, reflecting Woods’s current poor score and suggesting the inevitable. Finishing his play at 14 over par so far in the ongoing Open Championship and another missed cut led to a fan saying, “He really should just retire.”
