Lexi Thompson has had everyone’s eyes on her this entire golf season, not just because of her commendable gameplay but also because of her addition to the PGA Tour as the seventh woman ever to be a part of it. Her day 1 performance made her the headline at the Shriners Children’s Open, earning her compliments from LPGA golfers like Paige Spiranac.
After her second-day performance, the player almost etched her name in golf history, but her final miss dashed her hopes. Thompson’s presence at the Shriners Children’s Open had a deeper significance beyond the scorecard, and it now appears that her fate is being replicated like that of her biggest supporter, the former LPGA golfer who also played on the PGA Tour.

This season, after making it to the greens in Vegas, Lexi Thompson embarked to become the first woman in 78 years to secure a coveted spot in the PGA Tour’s 36-hole cut. On Day 2, with an impressive 2-under 69, she was very close to achieving the remarkable feat. She even managed to make two long birdie putts that put her on the cusp of rewriting history.
However, fate had other plans. One unfortunate swing and a missed putt on the 18th hole dashed her hopes. Thompson’s rounds of 73-69 showed her ability to deal with the difficult course, which also implies that she could have made the cut, but ended up like Michelle Wie West, who, in eight PGA Tour starts, failed to make the cut. Babe Didrikson Zaharias was the last woman to make a 36-hole cut on the PGA Tour in 1945.
After Thompson’s failure at the Shriners Children’s Open, LPGA Tour golfers including Paige Spiranac and Michelle Wie West herself took to SNS to let Thompson know how proud they were of her performance. Wie posted about Thompson’s performance on her Instagram story and added, “Proud of you!!” Paige Spiranac also posted about Thompson’s gameplay on her Twitter and revealed how she was “absolutely crushing it.”

As Thompson now takes some rest to get back on the greens later, here’s a glimpse of her D1 play on the Vegas grounds.

Thompson did face some challenges on the first day, including missed putts, three bogeys, and a double bogey on the seventh hole, but she nonetheless managed to make a par on the 18th hole.
After her Day 1 performance, media outlets reported that if she had managed to win the Shriners Children’s Open this year, she would surpass Bryson DeChambeau on the OWGR charts.
