Wishes are pouring in for the 2024 PGA Championship winner. Xander Schauffele managed to clinch his first win of the 2024 season all the while jumping from the third spot to the second place on the OWGR. Tailing him closely at the event was Bryson DeChambeau with a scintillating play on the greens all the while giving him a tough competition. And Paige Spiranac also joined in dishing out praises for both of them.

The golfing diva went ahead and shared a tweet on her X handle (formerly Twitter) mentioning how there were two comeback stories at the recently ended “drama-packed, incredible” major, that of both of them; “Xander was finally able to get it done when it mattered most and Bryson is beloved by the fans. Feel good all around.” Spiranac complimenting the two, however, couldn’t be helped but be seen as a subtle attempt to lay bare the current situation of the Jay Monahan-led circuit.

Schauffele, before his recent victory, had been very unlucky when it came to the PGA Tour events. He had raked in eight top-10 placements in 11 starts including two runner-up finishes at the PLAYERS Championship and the Wells Fargo Championship thereby making his major win all the more sweeter. On the other hand, DeChambeau, who was initially disliked by many because of his reported $125 million LIV jump, was immensely cheered on by fans and spectators during the tournament.

The exciting tournament which saw both the golfers exhibiting their best while entertaining the fans was not covered properly. The PGA Tour, as a result, came to be plagued by coverage woes. The ESPN broadcast was filled with commercials, course overviews, analysts’ points of view, and shots from the practice range resulting in much dissent among the viewers.

Moreover, such a situation at the recently ended major can’t help but question the whole delay in the PGA Tour-PIF merger. With the first and the second place being dominated by players from both the leagues, coupled with the amount of love that a LIV Golf Pro received on the greens truly makes one wonder as to why the entire framework agreement is being pushed back. The setback had even led to the resignation of two independent directors from the PGA Tour Policy Board, Jimmy Dunne and Mark Flaherty.

PGA Tour Policy Board faces yet another resignation

Just a couple of days prior to the start of the PGA Championship, Dunne had resigned from the Policy Board stating how his role and vote there felt “superfluous.” And now, soon after the major ended, Flaherty, another architect of the framework agreement and an independent director, stepped down from his post.

Flaherty hasn’t specified the reason for his choice but has just expressed his gratitude towards the commissioner as well as Chairman, Ed Herlihy, along with the various directors. “It’s been an honor and a privilege to serve on the Policy Board for the past 4.5 years… I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Commissioner Monahan and Chairman Herlihy for their leadership… to the dedicated staff at the PGA Tour who work endlessly to support the Board…”

A second resignation, along with there being no news of the merger truly paints a concerning situation for the sport of golf. The fans can only wait and see what these recent changes entail for the ‘Gentleman’s Game’!
