Paige Spiranac received death threats

It all started when Paige Spiranac appeared at the Dubai Masters in 2015 and 2016. People did not like her presence at the Masters because she did not rank among the top 1000 female players. People believed they only invited her because she has a huge social media presence (1.3 million Instagram followers then.)

She told The Guardian that she started receiving hate and death threats on social media. People were invading her privacy and blackmailing her. And all this continued while she tried to play the game.

According to her, people of the golf industry look at her as a gimmick. If she were a guy with the same social media following, no one would take her for granted and disrespect her. People would have actually applauded.

Golf is not a progressive sport according to Spiranac

The golf lovers call it a progressive sport, but according to Paige, that’s just not the case. It is a male dominated sport, and it is hard for women like her to survive there.

She said, “It’s such a male-dominated sport. It has been around for so long and there are traditions. People like their traditions without change. When someone comes in wearing leggings instead of trousers, it is like the world is ending.”

It did not feel right!

She got really fed up with being judged based on her clothes. She was always seen as someone succeeding because of her clothes, glamour and social media following, and not her talents. She enjoyed playing golf, but she always felt like something was missing. Something did not feel right to her.

Talking to The Guardian, she said, “I have always had a different fashion style. I always felt like I never belonged and it is tough because I am a good player, I know what to do but I still don’t like going to new clubs because I am worried someone will say my skirt is too short or I don’t have a collar. Why does that even matter?”
