Among the many cynics was YouTuber and activist Charlie Kirk, whose words didn’t sit well with Spiranac.
Charlie Kirk called Simone Biles a ‘selfish sociopath’
In the aftermath of the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics, many pondered over Biles’ decision to take a backseat during the final rounds of the Olympics. In her own words, the 7-time Olympic medal winner prioritized her mental health over competing at the highest level. She claimed her mental health was one of the major factors in her decision to withdraw.
This left many, including Kirk, unhappy. In a YouTube video, the 29-year-old ripped into Biles’ withdrawal and the ripple effects of the setback. He called her a “selfish sociopath” for her decision to not carry on for her team.
He said, “I have to go look at these 4’11 Russian Olympians chewing on their gold medal, smirking at the Americans. I’m not okay with that,” he expressed his disappointment.
Furthermore, the YouTuber also claimed that “we are raising a generation of weak people like Simone Biles.” He later clarified his comments by praising Biles as “probably the greatest gymnast of all time”. But he also declared she was also “selfish, she’s immature, and a shame to the country”.
Support poured in for Biles, including Paige Spiranac
People did not take Kirk’s comments lightly. Many lashed out at him. Among those was Golf sensation Paige Spiranac, who had a fitting reply to recall Biles’ record-breaking achievements.
“Let’s not forget that Simone Biles has won over 35 medals for our country while being emotionally, physically, and se*ually abused by USA Gymnastics. Simone is incredibly strong and does not deserve any of this. Mental health should never be mocked,” she tweeted.
Spiranac has proved to be a supportive friend in such scenarios on multiple occasions. Never fearing a backlash, the ex-golfer promptly jumped in to make her statement and counter any vile comments. She has learned from her own bitter experiences though – the 29-year-old has faced a long list of offensive and awful comments through the internet, and she regularly reveals her steps in blocking those out and redeeming herself.
