The 2023 season has been full of ups and downs for Phil Mickelson. A couple of great finishes, an infamous exchange of heated words, and now a disheartening end to the 123rd edition of the US Open. Golf is not an easy game to predict; the North Course of the LACC just demonstrated that for two consecutive days. To say the least, it seems Mickelson woke up on the wrong side of the bed on Friday, leading to quite an anti-climactic finish to his birthday.
While many fans and experts had expected him to deliver exceptionally in Los Angeles, the results say another story. The golfer and fans, both must have felt awfully bad when the cut for the 2023 US Open was applied.

One hopes to be in their element on their birthday. Whatever one does on their birthday, they want to do a great job of it. Mickelson, in what must be a great disappointment for his fans, could not find his mojo on his special day and as it turned out, a round of 74 on Friday meant he had to exit the tournament.

It was a dull day for Mickelson on Friday after he carded a 1-under 69 in the first round. Just like the 2022 US Open, Mickelson missed the cut by a sizeable margin. This is his first miss out of the three major championships that he has played this season. What is assumed to be easier of the two sides of LACC, he struggled to keep his head above water on the front nine.
He made a bogey on the opening hole, a straightaway par-5, and an unimpressive double-bogey on the par-3 9th to finish the front side. While he tried to get back to the game with a birdie on the 16th, it didn’t amount to much after he bogeyed the previous two holes.
Mickelson, who signed a $200 million contract with LIV golf, showcased some brilliant drives and putts and went on to share second place with Brooks Koepka at the 2023 Masters earlier in the year. At the PGA Championship, he was not up to the mark but he still managed to make the cut and eventually finished T58. The third major of the year brought different tidings for him though, after a score of 3-over-par across two rounds. This just paved the way for fans to chime in with their remarks.
Golf world reacts to Mickelson’s exit from the 2023 US Open
Just like it had been anticipated, the 2023 US Open is making waves. The North Course, hosting a major for the first time, has been kind to some and cruel to others. While players like Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele have been able to tame the greens, other marquee talents have struggled. Besides Mickelson, Justin Rose, Max Homa, and Justin Thomas have also exited the tournament. Mickelson was actually one of the fan favorites for the edition. All through his special day, fans were rooting for the golfer on social media.

However, there were also fans who weren’t happy with his departure from the tournament. One fan wrote: ‘LOL In bowling when you lose in the bracket we have a saying……”Pack your s**t!“‘ Others cloaked their comments in humor.
Missed cut. He will have time to celebrate now.
