The golf world was on its edge as Zach Johnson unveiled his captain’s picks for the U.S. Ryder Cup team not too long ago. Many discussions are brewing as to whether the selected golfers deserve the spot or whether they will be able to respond to the call. Nevertheless, the selection is nothing short of an honor for the players and the same is the case with 34-year-old Rickie Fowler.

It can’t be helped if the American golfer is on cloud nine after his selection into the US team for the prestigious tournament. His dazzling performances in the 2022-23 season paved the way for getting included in the squad roster via the skipper’s selection.

Fowler opened up about the difference a year can make on The Fred Couples Show as he made his return to the squad after 4 years. The PGA Tour pro went ahead to share his struggles as he played the game keeping the esteemed event as his goal.

Fowler made sure to mention how it was a long road as he entered the 2022-23 season with a determined mindset to make the team a year later.  Moreover, Rickie opened up about the restructuring he went through as he said, “It (The Ryder Cup) was the thing at the top of my list. My overall goal,” while showcasing his patriotism to be part of the team.

The 34-year-old pointed out how one needs to go through a whole lot of golf in order to reach the tournament. He talked about the need for one to win or play consistently throughout the year to reach and accomplish yourself at events like the TOUR Championship, which eventually paved the way for the selection.

Fowler was ranked 178th on the Official World Golf Rankings in 2022 but he strived forward despite many obstacles to place himself at the 25th position in the standings in 2023. Moreover, he was able to make his 5th appearance in the Ryder Cup as a captain’s pick. Let us take a look at the eventful season that the golfer experienced which led to his selection.

Fowler and his performance in the 2022-23 season

The 6X PGA Tour winner boasted a total of 8 top 10 finishes in the season with a win coming off from the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic. He claimed the title and bagged a prize money of $1.5 million by finishing with a score of 24-under 264 in Detroit.

Meanwhile, his next best finishes included a T2 at the 2022 ZOZO Championship and a 5th place at the 2023 U.S. Open Championship, where he settled for a score of 275 (-5).

The golfer was able to deal with the jam-packed golfing schedule with a sanguine mindset. Fowler had mentioned the confidence he had in his game during the FedEx Cup championship playoffs. Moreover, he’ll be looking forward to tackling the upcoming Ryder Cup with the same mindset as he aims to lift the trophy with his team.
