This year, the PGA Tour has made a number of rapid modifications in response to the increasing competition from the LIV Golf League. One of these changes was the introduction of 17 designated events with dramatically increased prizes, with an average prize money of $20 million. This consists of major tournaments as well as the forthcoming PGA Championship.

However, beginning in 2024, the PGA Tour wants to adopt more limited-field, no-cut events. These tournaments will have a big impact on the sport and will likely change the way players compete against one another and the way viewers interact with the game.

During the most recent designated tournament, the Wells Fargo Championship, according to Bob Harig of Sports Illustrated, Jay Monahan stated, “Our preference would be no-cut events.” Even though Tiger Woods tried hard to stop it, the PGA Tour is set to add no-cut events to the schedule.

These no-cut events would let all golfers play until the end of the event instead of cutting the number of players before the final two rounds. Even though some players don’t like the idea of no-cut tournaments, it looks like Monahan is still going to try to make them happen.

Under the terms of the plan, which is called the Designated Event Model, tournament fields would be capped at between 70 and 80 players and there would be no cut. Nonetheless, this resulted in a backlash, with even one of the most vocal proponents of the move, Rory McIlroy, conceding that the decision resulted in “some angry players.”

Tiger Woods expressed his opinion during the Masters by saying, “I certainly am pushing for my event to have a cut.” Former World No. 1 Jason Day is another golfer who supports keeping the cuts. “I like having the cut…”, said Day.
