Tom Watson is very well known in the golf community. The 73-year-old, now retired, golfer, has a long list of accomplishments. Over the course of his career, he has won the Masters twice, the US Open once, and the Open Championship five times. Along with his eight major titles, the legend has 39 PGA tournament victories.

In May of 2022, he got engaged to LeslieAnne Wade, a former CBS Sports executive. Two months later, they took their vows and were married. It’s been only three months since their wedding, but unfortunately, the couple have already decided to split up.

Watson’s list of past marriages

The two-time American captain has been married thrice now. His first marriage was to Linda Ruben in 1972, and they separated five years later.

In 1999, at the age of 50, he married his second wife, Hillary Watson. They spent 20 years together. In October 2017, she was diagnosed with cancer. Despite surgery and chemotherapy sessions, she passed away from pancreatic cancer late in November 2019.

Wade worked with CBS Sports and was the Senior Vice President of Communications there. She has also been a managing partner at Wade Media Management since January 2010, and co-founded White Tee Partners, a women-owned marketing agency, in February 2021.

Tom and Wade have known each other for 15 years now. A year and a half after the unfortunate death of his ex-wife, Hillary, Tom Watson and LeslieAnne Wade announced their engagement while visiting the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. Two months later, early in July, the couple were married,  and were keen to start a new chapter in their lives together.

Why did Tom Watson and LeslieAnne Split up?

Three months into the marriage, LeslieAnne seemed heartbroken as she announced on Twitter that both she and Tom had decided to end their marriage. “Sadly, the inability to launch and build our relationship properly in these early days forces us to terminate our marriage,” she said.

Wade had been suffering from an unknown illness, and that seems to be what led to their decision to split up. She also went on to mention that Tom had been by her side all the way, and said, “Tom has been supportive, including making sure I have the best possible care.” Fortunately, Wade will be making a full recovery from her illness. “I am beyond grateful to him and blessed that I will make a complete and full recovery.”

Marriage by itself isn’t always easy. And the strain of an aspect like health definitely doesn’t help. But the couple have no regrets and still hold each other in high regard. Wade tweeted, “He will always mean the world to me and our connection is forever”. The fans can only hope they maintain their 15-year friendship despite them no longer being together.
