Brian Harman may not have won a lot of events to attract the limelight since he turned pro. But this is his year. The American golfer has taken up one of the toughest challenges to claim the Claret Jug this season as well as match a few records set by legendary golfers over the years.

On Friday, Harman matched Tiger Woods‘ record on the Royal Liverpool links of scoring a low 65 after 36-holes. This particular accomplishment came with a twist on the par course which makes the 36-year-old golfer’s accomplishment historical. Having conquered one milestone, Harman set his sights on matching Tiger Woods once again.

Is Harman aiming for a higher goal than just winning the Open Championship?

Throughout the history of golf, there have been only 12 Open Championships hosted by Royal Liverpool since 1897. Golfers from different countries have taken the prize money and the glorious Claret Jug home, aside from having their names etched on the metal.

With Brian Harman’s pace at the 151st Open Championship so far, he has a decent chance of winning. He marked a steadfast gap to lead the event and if no one matches his score, he will claim the title. But there’s more to it.

Over the years, only 3 American golfers have claimed victory at Royal Liverpool Open Championships. It started with Walter Hagen in 1924 followed by Bobby Jones in 1930. Then came Tiger Woods in 2006, and that was it. The golf GOAT set his record of a low 65 to make the cut and went on to carve his name on the Claret Jug.

It has been 17 years, but if Brian Harman claims the trophy, he will be the 4th American to win the prestigious event at Hoylake and match the three-time Open Championship winner’s record after long last.

What’s at stake for Harman at Royal Liverpool?

The prize purse for the Open Championship 2023 took a $2.5 million hike this year to a total sum of $16.5 million. So, if Brian Harman claims victory over his competitors, he will take home $3 million in cash prize along with the title and the exquisite Claret Jug.

Aside from the tangible benefits, Harman will also earn his maiden Major Tournament title. Therefore, winning this year’s Open Championship means a lot to the American Golfer. His name will be alongside legendary PGA Tour golfer Tiger Woods for more reasons than one.
