Is Lanto Griffin the unsung hero of making cuts, or just a funny footnote in golf history?

It’s the FedEx Cup Fall season. But if you look close—and by ‘close’ we mean really close—you might be able to spot Scottie Scheffler on the field. Confused as to how we can see the world’s No. 1 male golfer at the Black Desert Golf Course when he’s not even in the field? You’ll have to keep an eye out for Lanto Griffin.

The 36-year-old PGA Tour Pro was spotted in an interview after he made the cut at the Black Desert Championship. And there, he mentioned how he was just like the 2024 Masters champ when it comes to not missing the cut at tournaments. “Yeah, apparently, I’m the ‘Scottie Scheffler’ of making cuts on the number because this year, I’ve done it,” divulged the pro as he made a hilarious comparison between himself and the pro.

The athlete was alluding to how he makes big putts and big shots to make the cut. He did so while hilariously comparing himself to Scheffler, who does the same to win the tournaments. Scheffler is on a break after the 2024 Presidents Cup, and it seems that the golf world might not miss anymore on the field, after all! Do you get why he called himself ‘The Scottie Scheffler of making cuts’ now?

“You know he does it to win tournaments,” added the 2019 Houston Open champ. Scheffler sure does it to win, how else would anyone describe the terrific season he has had this year? Then Griffin recounted the 2024 PGA Tour event that saw Nick Dunlap emerge victorious. “I do it to make the cut on the number. It’s crazy to think back to this year, (The) American Express, you know birdied four of my last five, I’ve done it probably 8-10 times.” In Round 3 at La Quinta, Griffin carded seven birdies, four of which came from holes 5 to 8 of the front nine.

Can’t disagree with the golfer who made 92 cuts out of the 143 events he teed off in when he hilariously said, “So if Scottie’s watching, I’m you on cuts made.” Scheffler, on the other hand, has made 111 cuts in 130 events on the Tour.

Interestingly, Griffin didn’t disappoint again as he made it to the weekend at the 2024 Black Desert Championship on October 11, Friday, after dishing out rounds of 70-67 following the second day of play.

Come Saturday, he replicated the first day’s score of 1-under 70 at the Black Desert Resort by carding five birdies and two bogeys, not to mention a double bogey at the par-4, 13th hole. But he wouldn’t have managed to even tee off on Saturday and finish T59 as a result, had Griffin not donned his ‘Scottie Scheffler’ cap and hit eight birdies to make it to the weekend, and fight for the $7.5 million.

The golfer had only put up a figure of 1-under 70 on the first day and needed to be at least 5-under to play on Saturday. Surprisingly enough, the pro delivered and ensured he received at least a payday as he went back home without the title of champion. Guess he has earned the right to call himself the ‘Scottie Scheffler of making cuts’!
