We are witnessing some or the other update every day regarding the recent PGA Tour announcements. Jay Monahan took essential steps for the 2024 schedule of the Tour. The motive was to counter-challenge the rival LIV Golf league. However, it has not been a notable change across the golf world. Every coin has two sides, so does this situation. While many golfers and officials are on board with the changes, others are strictly against it. Alan Shipnuck recently had a conversation with a tournament director, and people supporting the change will not like it.

Things are going south for the PGA Tour

A few days back, the PGA Tour Player Director, Peter Malnati, expressed his disgust regarding the changes. And now a tournament director has also expressed his firm non-acceptance. Monahan’s efforts are currently looking at a dead end, as more and more people are standing against the no-cut events and more designated events next season.

According to a recent report, Alan Shipnuck engaged in an unexpected conversation with the tournament director at an old, proud PGA Tour event. Out of nowhere, he received a phone call, and the director wanted to vent. He explained what was wrong with the changes announced. Scrutinizing big names of the Tour, he said, “With all the change happening at the Tour, there is one side to the story that is not being told: ours. Monahan, Tiger, Rory, all the other top players—they seem to have forgotten their biggest customer, which is the title sponsors of the tournaments.”

The venting did not stop there. He further highlighted the losses already incurred by the American Tour. The director said, “Honda, Dell Computers, Mayakoba… they’re gone.” The disappointment was evident when he said, “If the Tour keeps losing big, longstanding sponsors, none of this other stuff matters because the business model is going to collapse. “According to him, all the tournament-level officials are on the front lines. And they are the only ones “trying to hold everything together.”

When did the conversation take place?

It was Tuesday, right after PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan’s meeting with the press. He answered all the questions regarding the recent announcements for over 75 minutes, at the Players Championship. Then suddenly, Shipnuck’s cell phone rang, and he heard an unfamiliar voice. It was someone, he has “never met or even spoken with.” No one knows who is this mysterious entity, but he has given some points to think upon.
