The first event of the season on the European Tour, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, concluded recently at Yas Links. Tyrrell Hatton, however, did not have a start to the year as he would have imagined, as one hole, in particular, gave him enough trouble to distress him for the entire duration.

Coming into the tournament as the defending champion, Tyrrell was probably already hesitant, considering the venue had undergone a change from last year’s Abu Dhabi Golf Club. Moreover, he didn’t seem to be a big fan of the new course, as the par-5 18th hole saw him play a wide variety of numbers.

Despite hitting two fantastic birdies, Friday and Saturday saw him hit a quadruple bogey and a seven respectively, which effectively hampered his chances of a repeat win. Despite this, he finished the week off with a T-6 on the leaderboard.

Tyrrell Hatton expresses displeasure against Yas Links
Anyone playing such a wide variety of numbers on a particular will understandably not be too fond of it. However, Hatton took his hatred to a whole new level. He said, “My feelings as I stood on the 18th green was still that I’d like to drop a bomb on that hole, and wipe it off the face of the earth!” Subsequently, he let the idea of a ‘complete re-design’ of the hole float, despite admitting that he was getting a little ahead of himself.

He went on to praise his performance barring the fumble on the 18th, claiming, “If it hadn’t been for what happened on 18 on Friday and Saturday this would have been a really good title defence, and I would have been in with a good chance of winning it again.”
Hatton’s fiery personality did not let him stop there. No, he continued his rant by further expressing his dislike for the course itself. He said, “There isn’t the same buzz, and I think a lot of that is down to where the rope lines are. The spectators are way back from the players on a lot of holes. I also think you could hurt an ankle on some of those slopes they have to clamber up and down. So no, it wouldn’t rate as one of my favourite golf courses.”
