52-year-old Phil Mickelson isn’t getting any younger. He has already eclipsed the half-century mark and has looked past his prime. The 6-time Major Championship winner is self-conscious about his health and eating habits. It was evident during his patchy run of form when he revealed the secrets of his extraordinary diet back in 2019.

Why did Phil Mickelson make the abrupt change in diet?
The world seemed to have given up on Mickelson back in 2019. The veteran golfer was in a torrid form and seemingly not in the right frame of mind. “I just haven’t been at my best mentally, physically, so I’m trying to control the things I can control, which is get physically better, let myself heal, give myself time to reset and recharge,” he had said.

Before the onset of the final major tournament of the year, the Open Championship, Mickelson was in need of help. He had missed seven cuts in 14 events while missing out early in the last two tournaments prior to the British Open.

Feeling the heat, Mickelson went out on a 10-day detour to Hawaii. This was no vacation for ‘Lefty’, as he included a six-day diet in his regime. He also practiced morning yoga on the beach and hiking on the islands, all on a diet of coffee and water.

The golfer was well-informed about his decision to change his diet scheme. “One thing that resonated with me was a quote I read that said, ‘Everything you eat is either causing disease or helping your body fight disease,’” he said. “That kind of resonated with me.”
But what exactly did Mickelson change in his diet? “I’ve only put vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, along with a special (blend) of coffee (into my diet). I think coffee is one of the most powerful antioxidant foods that we eat. So I’ve been working on this special blend to help heal, help with mental clarity, putting a lot of cool ingredients in,” he said.

Furthermore, Mickelson revealed the ingredients used in his special blend of coffee. “It has MCT (medium-chain triglyceride) oil for brain function, sea salt for overall energy, manuka honey for allergies and good bacteria, cinnamon for inflammation, collagen powder for recovery, and almond milk,” he said.

With all the changes in diet, the changes were visible. Mickelson reportedly lost around 15 pounds of weight in those 10 days in Hawaii. The healthy change was well-appreciated by fans, who felt the Open would form the basis of his comeback story.
Unfortunately, Mickelson couldn’t capitalize on his newfound fitness, missing the cut at the Royal Portrush. However, the diet regime got Mickelson back on his feet to compete at the highest level, which, beyond doubt, helped him secure a major two years later.
