Cobra Golf has been in business since the 1970s. According to Golf Monthly, Australian amateur golf champion, Thomas Crow established the business in 1973. Crow was passionate about the game and wanted to produce top-notch, cutting-edge golf equipment that would assist players in developing their skills. He believed serious amateurs like himself were being ignored and that is why Crow started the venture.

The business’s initial item was a ground-breaking iron model with a cavity back and perimeter weighing. Golfers were able to play better shots even when they didn’t strike the ball properly. It was because of the clubs’ more forgiving design. The Baffler utility wood, which he introduced two years later, was the first to gain commercial success. The Baffler had a soleplate with a patented design that worked well in deep rough. The soleplate had rails to skim across turf much more easily. Golfers of all ability levels were able to hit high and long shots because to it.

What made it successful was Crow’s genius introduction of the Baffler. Crow invited some golfers to the parking lot while the annual PGA Merchandise show was taking place in Orlando. He then challenged every professional golfer to hit the ball over all of the parked cars by placing a golf ball on the concrete, bringing out the Baffler, and setting the Baffler. He knew the model was built to carry off this act even though all the experts claimed it was impossible. Crow was aware that even from a cement lay, the ball would fly into the air swiftly, because of the rails on the clubhead’s underside and its low center of gravity.

A hit was surely born on the spot and this hit took the company to the new heights. Over the years, the Baffler has evolved many times, but still remains a fundamental part of Cobra Golf’s equipment today.

Cobra Golf’s developments over the course of 50 years

The Baffler was surely a significant innovation in golf club design. It helped establish Cobra Golf as a leading brand in the industry. However, the company did not stop there. In 1979 Crow introduced a driver with graphite head, and shaft and was 46-inch long. Cobra also became the first U.S club manufacturer which offered graphite-shafted woods and irons. Crow creativity led to more developments. The brand went on to reveal various popular models over the years, including King Cobra oversized irons (the industry’s first large-headed irons), Ti Offset woods, and Gravity Back drivers and irons. Cobra went on to become one of the first companies to introduce putters made of 3D-printed parts. It also was the first major club manufacturer to go for single-length iron sets.
