Is Scottie Scheffler the face of American golf we need at the Paris Olympics?

Thanks to the OWGR 1 ranking, Scottie Scheffler was the first golfer eligible for the 2024 Olympic Games. It has been an impressive six-win season so far for the golfer, which includes his second major win. That’s big! But it can get even bigger in Paris in the next few days. This is the first time Scheffler will be participating in the Olympics. So does that mean he’ll be representing America at the Opening Ceremony too?

The opening ceremony will begin at the Austerlitz Bridge. But it is not like any other stationery venue you have seen before. The ceremony will gradually travel almost 4 miles down the River Seine from its initial spot this time. According to NBC, “athletes will arrive via boat and cruise down the Seine River, passing by historic Paris landmarks, including the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral and the Louvre.”

Even though the golf events begin from August 1st onwards, it’s expected that Scottie Scheffler will attend. After all, according to Scheffler Scoop, a popular X page that posts regular updates about the World No. 1, he is already in Paris, a day ahead of the ceremony!

Update: Even though many expected to see him during the ceremony, Scheffler was not present. Many have speculated multiple reasons behind that, but none are yet confirmed. Don’t let that make you believe that the Olympics are not important for the golfer.

For Scheffler, being able to represent America at the Paris Olympics is more than special. And it wasn’t just about the excitement of competing for one’s nation. He cited other reasons too, like “bragging rights”!

The Olympics are a game of patriotic pride. And the same feelings loom in Scheffler’s heart, too. In an interview alongside Team USA, he even hinted at that. Playing for your country is always extremely exciting, and it will be pretty surreal doing it on the Olympic stage.” But that’s only a part of it for the World No. 1.

As much as the Olympics are about the flourishing of one nation over another, it is something else for golf. According to Scottie Scheffler, the Olympics gave the golfer a proper slap in the face of the critics who do not consider golf a sport. It’s also good bragging rights for people that tell me golf is not a sport—I can say it’s an Olympic sport.”

All those reasons, however, didn’t change anything with how he would approach the games. “As far as going over there and playing, I would approach it the same way I would a tournament here, the 28-year-old golfer stated in an interview with The Dallas Morning News last month. And that should perhaps be enough to bring America home a gold. After all the man has won 6 times already this year, so playing the same way is in no way a bad thing!
