Jason Day's slump vs. Lydia Ko's gold—Is this the ultimate comeback story in golf?

Gold! Gold! Gold! Lydia Ko has just won New Zealand one shiny gold, and with this, the 27-year-old female golfer has made a beautiful hat-trick. Gold, Silver, and Bronze—she won all three since golf returned to the Olympic platform after a gap of 112 years. It’s all cheers and appreciation now. Oh, and with this sensational win, she has also gained that much-needed 1 point to enter the toughest Hall of Fame, which is the LPGA Hall of Fame.

She began with an even-par score on the first day. And no one thought she would easily climb up the ladder from a T13 finish in the first round, directly to the 3rd position on the second day, but she did. Yes, even if you cannot think of another female golfer with such capacity, you are going to remember Lydia Ko’s feat for a long time.

By the end of the second round, Ko had a total of 5-under. With another 4-under from the third round, Ko reached the peak with a 9-under at the end of the third round. And now, she kept the energy high and finished the 2024 Olympics for women’s golf with a two-stroke lead, a finishing score of 10-under par, and a gold medal. That’s some finale.

Along with gold, she has also taken the internet by storm. Yes, this was bound to happen after such an iconic play. But in the process, Lydia Ko also helped her ex-partner, Jason Day, without knowing. Day and Ko paired up together for the Grant Thornton Invitational last year and won the title with a one-stroke victory. You must be wondering how Ko’s win helps Jason Day.

This year, Jason Day has been getting immense rebuke from the golf fandom. Several fans criticized and questioned whether Day was at all suitable to represent Australia at the Olympics. However, with Lydia Ko winning the title, she took the entire spotlight, and for all the right reasons. Yes, Day’s performance in men’s golf is now an old story. Everyone is busy celebrating Ko’s much-deserving and rather stunning victory.

The news of Ko completing her medal trifecta garnered a lot of attention, and fans were too happy for her. The congratulations were in order, and so were the compliments.

One of the fans announced, “The @OlympicGolf tournament is simple. The golfers play 4 rounds and at the end, Lydia Ko wins a medal!” The fan simply put forward the trend that Lydia Ko has set since the 2016 Rio Games. In her very first appearance in the 2016 Olympics, Ko won a silver. But along with the medal, she became the youngest female golfer to win in the Olympics. Her Tokyo Olympics did not disappoint fans either, although she did not win another silver, Ko still won a bronze. With this year’s gold, she now has a perfect record of winning a medal at the end of every women’s golf event in the Olympics.

Another fan stated, “Lydia Ko is absolutely dominant.” Ko’s golf career has been stellar no doubt. 7 Ladies European Tour titles, 20 from LPGA including two major wins, Ko has been phenomenal in female golf. But when it comes to as prestigious a stage as the Olympics, Ko becomes even more fierce. She wins medals every time. Her play proves her skills without fail. She has thus dominated female golf in the Olympics by becoming the only golfer to win every time she has participated.

“In the dictionary next to the word “solid” there should be a picture of Lydia Ko at the Olympics. Great performance under pressure,” complimented another fan. Pressure. Yes. Imagine a double-bogey on the 13th hole of the final round, and only a stroke’s difference remains between another golfer. That’s pressure. But Lydia Ko did not let this pull her back. She only knew one direction, and it was about moving forward. With her Olympic Gold medal, she is now an LPGA Hall of Famer as well. Hence, the fan describes how Lydia Ko defines the word ‘solid’.

Another fan pointed out, “Lydia Ko has been legit rooting for her opponents putts to go in like shes a fan and not someone trying to pull off one of the coolest accomplishments in golf.” Ko has been sweet and amiable in most of her public appearances. But, in a competitive event such as the Olympics, no one can even imagine cheering up for one’s opponents. Ko’s victory proves both her confidence as well as the true sportsmanship she portrayed in real life.

Olympic Slam. I doubt anyone ever does that.” Yes, an Olympic Slam! No one has done it before, and it will be one of the toughest records to beat, especially when Ko made it possible in a back-to-back feat. This goes down in history.
