Scottie Scheffler in the Paris Olympics—Is he America's best hope for a golf gold medal?

Scottie Scheffler, World No. 1, has experienced one of the most stunning seasons so far. Six PGA Tour wins, including a major, a few top-10 finishes, an arrest, and several equipment-related complaints—and you can sum up 2024 Scheffler. In the process, his own voice over social media has subsided to a great degree. So much so that he landed in Paris almost undercover! But at the last moment, he was busted.

That’s right. Scheffler has arrived in Paris and has been preparing for his event. No one would have known if the former Chelsea center-back John Terry had not shared photos with him in Les Bordes. He captioned the photos as “World Number 1 @scottie.scheffler 🏌🏻‍♂️What a top guy. 👊🏻💙 Great Trip 🇫🇷💙 Les Bordes.”

According to Golf Planate, “To familiarize himself with French customs and traditions a few days before the Olympic golf tournament in Guyancourt, Scottie Scheffler treated himself to a getaway to one of the most beautiful golf resorts in France.” Scheffler was hence at Sologne in the Bordes area, preparing for his very first Olympic appearance in Paris. His preparations have been going on so vigorously that the golfer chose not to attend the opening ceremony on July 27th either.

His presence in Paris has been creating much buzz among the fans. But the reactions are quite mixed. While some fans are overjoyed to see world no. 1 represent the USA, a few heavily criticized his absence at the opening ceremony.

Golf World is overwhelmed to witness Scottie Scheffler in Paris

One of the fans stated, “Bearded Scottie. It’s already over.” The hypothesis of Bearded Scottie arose when Scheffler was winning trophies in a row every time he was witnessed with a stunning beard! Golf Digest had made a viral post claiming that the Bearded Scheffler won the Hero World Challenge, the Player’s Championship, and the Arnold Palmer Invitational. With a return to his bearded look, fans are hopeful that his Paris game might be a great performance as well.

Another fan wrote, “PROTECT HIM AT ALL COSTS.” With a massive improvement in his career within one calendar year, Scheffler has quite the fandom. His rise to the World No. 1 position is also something that makes all his fans quite protective of Scheffler, especially when he is about to represent his nation on one of the greatest international sports platforms.

“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH The King He’ll bring the gold medal home and will cook the golf course, and everyone there (Cheffler is back),” said another fan. Team USA and its fans are quite hopeful about getting gold again after the Tokyo Games. The two-time Major winner had been quite hopeful about golf being an Olympic sport. He revealed that, besides representing one’s country, it is also an apt reply to anyone who questioned the credibility of golf being an authentic sport. Hence, with all the motivation since Scheffler just arrived in Paris, fans are all enthusiastic about him.

Someone else disappointedly commented,Why would you not go to the opening ceremonies? Not only the chance to see the spectacle (whether you liked it or not), but to celebrate with the other athletes. Odd choice IMHO.” The Opening Ceremony of the Olympics is more than just a gathering and an eventful evening. For every sports enthusiast, it is a traditional celebration that cannot be disputed. Where everyone was expecting one of the most talked-about golfers of the present day, Scheffler was missing. This certainly felt wrong to many hopeful fans who wished to see the golfer be a part of the celebration.

However, a fan tried to defend Scheffler against all the hate he was receiving for not showing up at the opening ceremony. They stated, “He has a super young baby and made the choice with his busy schedule to come in closer to when the event is actually happening. It is hard to blame him when he has the freedom to choose to be home with family for longer.” Scheffler became a father only this May; hence, his role as a new dad certainly calls for a lot of time and attention towards his baby. Moreover, the golfer has been playing back-to-back tournaments as well. Which hardly leaves him any resting period. Thus, his fan argues that he should not be judged, especially when he has an exceptionally busy schedule and the opening ceremony has always been optional.
