Of all the LPGA Tour players, the one that every golf fan knows is Annika Sorenstam. She is one of the most accomplished players on the tour. The ex-pro is one of the most talented women to ever play the sport, and she even has her name in the Hall of Fame. Since retiring from golf, she’s turned into an entrepreneur and is now worth $40 million, but the ex-golf pro also remembers a time when things weren’t that easy. In fact, back in college, she couldn’t afford the basic necessities.

Sorrenstam has come far since her college days. The 10-time major winner is now married, has two children. She is also the world’s richest female golfer, thanks to the multi-million dollar company she started.

In February 2021, Sorenstam sat down with Graham Bensinger for an interview. There, the golf star opened up about her freshman year in college. While the other students settled in with loads and loads of stuff, Sorenstam had nothing. “I didn’t have any blankets, I didn’t have any pillows, I didn’t have any sheets,” she recalled.

The ex-golf pro’s roommate, Leta Lindley, on the other hand, had come with a “U-Haul”. The amount of stuff she had brought astonished the 10-time major winner, especially since their dorm room was so small. While her roommate settled in, Annika just lay in the corner with no basic amenities.

But Leta’s father was quick to notice this. “He was very helpful. He said I think you need some stuff,” the Hall of Famer said. So, Mr. Lindley took the 72-time LPGA Tour winner shopping that day. They headed over to a warehouse store, and her roommate’s kind and helpful father helped her out with all the stuff she needed to buy.

The store the golf legend visited with the Lindley family was gigantic. “I’ve never seen such a big store in my life; I mean, it was a massive warehouse,” she said. The new setting instantly overwhelmed the LPGA Tour star. So much so that her baffled mind began forgetting what things were called.

But fortunately, the Lindley family was very understanding and patient. Sorenstam pointed to things and demonstrated what she needed with actions, such as holding her hands together against her head to indicate a pillow. She eventually got all the basic amenities and to this day remembers her roommate’s father’s kindness.
