Tiger Woods is arguably very prone to injuries. The dilemma of physical pain started way earlier, in 1994, when he had scar tissue removed. After that, his athletic career brought him one ailment after another. His multiple car accidents made things so dire for him that he had to step back and take some time off.

This, however, was a blessing in disguise. It gave the golf legend time to focus on himself and his family, and that changed his life. And a few years ago, in a candid interview, Woods revealed how that had helped him understand the struggles of his own father, Earl Woods, better!

Back in 2016, soon after Woods turned 40, he was interviewed by the prestigious Time magazine, during which he reflected on his injuries, giving him a chance to spend more time with his children. Speaking about his injuries, he said that it definitely was not something he wanted to happen, but it did. And he managed to make his peace with it. “Put it this way. It’s not what I want to have happen, and it’s not what I’m planning on having happen. But if it does, it does. I’ve reconciled myself to it.”

He also expressed that his kids are everything to him. He couldn’t bear the thought of not being involved in their lives, despite his busy schedule. “It’s more important for me to be with my kids. I don’t know how I could live with myself not being able to participate in my kids’ lives like that. That, to me, is special.”

In the sit-down, Woods also revealed that it was only after becoming a father and experiencing these life-altering moments that he realized the anxiety of his own father when they would golf together. The fear of injuries and uncertainty were there then too. “Now I know what my dad felt like when we’d go out there and play nine holes in the dark,” he stated.

Woods’s father, Earl, is the reason that the 82-time winner was introduced to the sport at an earlier age. The army man’s constant nudge and support of his son undoubtedly contributed a lot to shaping his career. Now that Woods himself is a father, life has come full circle for him, and he has found himself in the shoes of his father. And just like Earl, he too tries his best to keep his children close and connected—many times through golf itself!
