At the 2024 BMW Championship, Ludvig Aberg had a nosebleed, but instead of panicking, he wiped it off with the dirty end of his towel—because why not? Then, like a true pro, he drained a 50-foot birdie putt. But the LPGA has witnessed some truly inventive responses to mid-round nosebleeds.
“That was very exciting,” said Manon De Roey after her strong performance during the second round of the Chevron Championship. Despite dealing with the recent weather woes at The Club at Carlton Woods, the Belgian golfer has performed well so far. Thanks to an eagle putt on the 13th hole, she sat in a tie for sixth place after round two, with scores of 68 and 71, respectively. However, for Manon De Roey, the Chevron Championship is arguably more eventful than for her fellow LPGA golfers, given a recent health scare.

During the second round of the Chevron Championship, the Belgian golfer dealt with a nosebleed. Despite the seriousness of the situation, De Roey’s way of handling the nosebleed was so unique that it had fans (and herself) rolling with laughter. To stop the bleeding mid-play, De Roey grabbed a tampon from her bag and put it in her nose—problem solved! However, during the post-round interview, De Roey sounded embarrassed about the situation.

The LPGA’s official handle took the clip of Manon De Roey’s interview and shared it on their Instagram with the caption, “Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do 😂.” She said, “Yeah, I think it’s just with the heat, maybe. From inside the cold air-conditioning, and then outside, the heat. I had it a few times in the course, actually, in the past. So, I just–I don’t know if I should say this, but I just had a tampon in my bag, so I put it up. That’s the only thing I had.” Throughout her explanation, Manon De Roey kept laughing.

It is rare to see a solution as unique as this, but something similar happened with Canadian national team captain Atiba Hutchinson during a 2022 FIFA World Cup game. In that match, Hutchinson’s Canadian team lost 4-1, but it was his nosebleed and its treatment that made headlines! In the second half, noticing Hutchinson’s nosebleed, the Canadian medical staff offered him a tampon and put it in his nostril. Although these moments are uncommon, De Roey’s situation is certainly one that can be related to. And her fans don’t want her to feel embarrassed about it–after all, desperate times call for desperate measures!

Birdies are not the only thing getting stuffed at the greens this LPGA season. While everyone thought she was pulling tissues out of her bag, Manon De Roey became the first golfer to nosebleed into a viral moment!
Seeing De Roey embarrassed, several fans flocked to the comment section of the post to encourage Manon De Roey during this health scare. One of the fans said, “Oh @mderoey, college taught you so much!! 😂 I love you!!! Way to handle it like a pro 👊 -5 let’s keep it going tomorrow!!” Keeping in mind her scores in the first two rounds, especially in the second round, given the nosebleed, you have to give a nod to her performance.
Currently playing in round three, fans will keep an eye on her! Considering De Roey’s form at The Club at Carlton Woods, it is likely we may see a good performance from her, even after the nosebleed! Then, two of the fans said, “You can absolutely say that girl, nothing to be ashamed of, well equipped with tampons ☺️” while the other said, “Now that’s being creative and resourceful!!!” These do not need explanations. But being equipped certainly pays off!

One of the fans said, “Our athletic trainer did this for all of our sports teams, and it works!! Mess free, quick, and gets you and your mind back in the game!” Although not medically recommended, a tampon can be used in desperate situations. As a makeshift solution for a nosebleed, you can insert it into the nostril to apply direct pressure to the nasal septum or the source of the bleeding. Additionally, the tampon absorbs blood, helping to keep the area clean. Consequently, this allows golfers to focus on their game with minimal distraction.
Lastly, a fan said, “You gotta do what you gotta do! Welcome to East Texas! ✌🏿✌🏿🇯🇲🇺🇲.” Word! Due to the stormy weather in Texas, temperatures are fluctuating, which is likely a reason for the nosebleed. These health-related incidents during golf tournaments aren’t exactly common, but they’re certainly not unheard of, especially when you’re out there in the sun, wind, or just the stress of trying to sink that perfect putt. We, even though appreciating her first-aid move, hope she won’t have to deal with it again!
