Why did John Daly withdraw from the PGA Championship in 2020?
Daly has been facing issues with his health for the longest time. The golf star has been battling cancer for quite some time now. Moreover, he has had to make certain professional decisions based on how healthy he is. And there was a time when Daly withdrew from the 2020 PGA Championship unexpectedly. But the reason for his withdrawal was his health.
The year 2020 has been challenging for all of us. The COVID-19 pandemic is something that affected everyone entirely, including people’s economic and social life. And it was even harder for athletes, especially for the ones suffering from underlying health issues. As it is known to most of his fans, Daly has diabetes. And that is not all, the golfer has several other issues with his health and is at an age where he would avoid any risks of falling sick.
And therefore, as a precaution and to avoid traveling, Daly made a safe call by withdrawing his participation from the PGA Championship in 2020. His decision was no different than other golfers including Vijay Singh, Francesco Molinari, and Padraig Harrington, who also did the same. However, his reasons were much more than just maintaining social distancing during such a time.

After fans asked him multiple times about why he withdrew from the tournament, Daly took things to Twitter. He wrote “People keep asking why I (withdrew) from PGA??? California now #1 in cases/deaths, I had knee surgery, I’m a diabetic (and) I don’t feel comfortable flying. Being too close proximity to even small crowds & risk exposure with my health not worth it! God Bess & y’all be safe!”

Nevertheless, flying all the way to California and playing among small crowds of potentially infected people was something that Daly wanted to avoid. And the fact that he valued his health over his game was not at all his fault. Things outside the sports world were even shut down for a long time. Schools, colleges, gyms, shops, everything was closed only to avoid unnecessary infection among the people. Thankfully, Daly’s decision got him through the rough time all healthy and fine.
