A lot has been going on in the golf world at the moment. While the dreamt “PGA Tour Enterprise” struggles to find a footing, in reality, the leadership on both ends has been called into question. Interestingly, as Jay Monahan’s PGA Tour rests at the center of these negotiations, his standing as a leader has been the most severely critiqued, until recently.

However, amid a pool of critiques, Jay Monahan has found an unsuspected ally from the other side of the golf world. This interesting friend in need of Monahan is LIV Golf’s Bubba Watson. The RangeGoats GC captain stretched his kind hand to a sinking Monahan and ended the questions about his ‘questionable’ leadership.

A friend in need is a friend indeed! Quite cheesy? Isn’t it? Well, thankfully for the face of the PGAT Commissioner, Bubba Watson has proved this old saying true. Despite moving to LIV Golf back in 2022, the 45-year-old has proved that he still holds Jay Monahan in high regard.

When asked if he sees Monahan as a strong leader in comparison to Greg Norman, Watson had a pretty understanding and diplomatic response. With his answer, he also somewhat shed light on the matter that Monahan is not the primary decision-maker on the tour, and there are other people involved in the process.

At the NCG Golf Podcast, Watson said, “Jay is not the big voice; Jay is the face. But there are people behind the scenes; there’s a board of directors on the PGA Tour. Jay has done an amazing job for his organization. Greg has done an amazing job. I’m friends with both of them. I love both of them. I think they’ve both run their organizations to the best of their ability.”

Hinting at his past bonds with both the people in charge, Watson’s balanced response was not as expected considering the sharp words previously stated by some of his LIV Golf counterparts, like Phil Mickelson.

Phil Mickelson’s bold take on Jay Monahan’s position as a leader

As the previously set merger deadline of December 31st, 2023, came dangerously close, LIV Golf’s Phil Mickelson, a key member in helping launch the PIF-backed enterprise, was one of the quickest and boldest ones to make Jay Monahan’s leadership stand in the court of public justice. According to him, the situation that the golf world is in is mostly Monahan’s doing.

His exact words were, “Golf is in this situation entirely because of [Monahan].” He also talked about how the PGA Tour commissioner was losing trust among his players. Mickelson added, “There’s no unity or path forward with [Monahan] involved, in my opinion as well.” With LIV golfers and PGAT pros questioning Monahan’s leadership, Watson’s remarks appear to be a breath of fresh air! Don’t you think so?
