It’s a lot more than pride this time around which is at stake for the American team at the Ryder Cup. The competition had its own share of drama following the rumors of a small rift in the team, along with a slight tussle between Rory McIlroy and Joe LaCava, who once used to carry the bag for none other than Tiger Woods.

The looper’s current main man Patrick Cantlay is surrounded by certain reports of his protesting against old Ryder Cup traditions. But what’s surprising is that LaCava’s old partner, the GOAT of the game himself, also had his nationalism called into question once! Well, a curious game of coincidences don’t you think?

The Ryder Cup doesn’t give any official compensation to the golfers competing in the tournament. But even so, the biennial event has been netting a tremendous amount of profit for both the PGA of America and the European Tour. And, a number of players, including Woods, voiced their discontent against the flow of money back in the 1999 tournament, which was kept away from the players.

A lot of golfers, including the legend, even had discussions about skipping the next edition of the tournament to be held in 2001. The professionals were quite discontent about not knowing where the money went despite the golfers playing a huge part in raking in the profit as they were meeting countless commitments throughout the event week.

The ‘boycott threat’ brought in a lot of controversy, as people interpreted them as the athletes wanting to play more for money than national pride. But such accusations were calmed down as American player David Duval and his team clarified their objective, which was entirely about where the profits were going. They even went on to say how they would be willing to give their share to a charity of choice.

Following the controversy, the Ben Crenshaw-led American team saw themselves propelling past Europe, who started the singles with a 10-6 lead, to win by a 14.5–13.5 margin in the ‘Battle of Brookline’. The win was even sweeter as the squad managed to convince the PGA of America to present each of the members with $200,000 each, which would then be evenly split up and donated to various charities.

It is unclear if such a result was on Cantlay’s mind when he chose to go hatless this week. But if the report on the golfer does turn out to be true, then he was not alone in his endeavors as many professionals before him have had the same thought.

Cantlay’s ‘Hat-Gate’ controversy

A British media report indicated how Cantlay believes that the golfers should be compensated for their participation in the prestigious tournament. As per the report, he made his protest known by going hatless on the course, earning the ire of many, including the rival fans.

The European crowd went ahead to wave their caps at the US player in a bid to troll him on Saturday. But the American team came out in support of their teammate when they did the same at the end of a fourball match after winning the last two holes. LaCava did the same but before the last-hole action could be completed, leading to the Northern Irishman having a tussle with the looper on the course.
