Annika Sorenstam’s memorable advice to fellow veteran golfer

Suzy Whaley is a name well-known in the golfing world. Thus, it is not hard to grasp the various achievements she has in her name. One among these remains the historical moment surrounding the 2003 Greater Hartford Open.

The golf veteran, in a recent clip, along with Annika Sorenstam, is seen reminiscing the 2-decade old tournament and events that took place with it. In the video, Whaley is seen reminding Sorenstam of the time when she had asked the golf star for advice regarding the upcoming tournament. Sorenstam humorously is seen commenting, “I am curious what I had to say.”

Well, Whaley indulged her with an instant reply. Per the golfer’s 20-year-old words, the former LPGA Tour Pro said, “Don’t get there too early.” Her words, she recalled, had been accompanied by a smile and an approachable attitude.

It was during the 2003 LPGA Championship, Whaley grabbed a blessed opportunity to seek advice directly from the golf legend just weeks before participating against male opponents. Sorenstam herself was the first woman in 53 years to play in a PGA Tour event alongside men. This could have seemed like the perfect reason for Whaley to seek help from the golf star.

Following the recollection of the advice, it was the execution of it by Whaley 20 years back that got both of them laughing.

The implementation of Sorenstam’s advice by Suzy Whaley at the TPC River Highlands

What looked like a great piece of advice required a similar kind of implementation. Hence, Suzy Whaley found herself dismissing the player pathway to the first tee. This happened right after she reached the event location, TPC River Highlands, on time. Instead, she decided that the best way to “not have too much time” was by sneaking under the ropes.

However, as soon as she was gonna make a cut through the right, her endeavor was paused by one of the volunteers. He asked Whaley, “Where are you going?”. At this point in the story, both Sorenstam and the 56-year-old veteran voiced out their answers at the same time. Where the 10-time women’s major winner said, “I have a tee time“, Whaley exclaimed, “I am going to play.

Furthermore, the three-time Connecticut Women’s Open Champion revealed that her answer received an “Oh” as a reply. The volunteer informed Whaley that she was running late by 10 minutes. However, at that moment the golfer couldn’t think of anything else except Sorenstam’s words.

She said, “Literally, all I could think about was you standing on this putting green saying, ‘Don’t get there too early’.” And that is how the reminiscent conversation between the two veteran golfers ended.
