We’ve all heard the phrase “body positivity,” but let’s be real – sometimes we just need a little motivation to take care of ourselves. For Charley Hull, a talented professional golfer, that motivation came from an unexpected place. Many believe that the golfer lost all that weight because of her smoking habit but no! It’s no surprise that Hull’s journey to wellness wasn’t easy and she used to smoke regularly which had her struggle with her weight, but with the support of her ex-husband, Ozzie Smith, she turned her life around. Together, they created a healthier lifestyle that included a balanced diet and regular exercise.
The results? Hull dropped an impressive 10 kg (22 lbs) and gained a newfound energy and confidence that shines through on and off the golf course. Thanks to Smith, an MMA fighter, Hull underwent a remarkable weight loss journey. Before the 2019 global pandemic, Hull’s appearance suggested she had stored fat. But with Smith’s encouragement, she adopted a strict diet and exercise routine, shedding 10 kgs.
In a 2019 interview, Hull credited Smith for pushing her to improve, saying, “He’s helped me address issues with my game. He’s quite strict with me and makes sure that when I go to the gym I don’t just go along and get distracted”, per House and Whips. The weight loss has helped the golfer perform a lot better on the golf field and has reduced the issues she had with jet lag. Hull’s 10 kg transformation, achieved through a combination of diet and exercise, has significantly benefited her game and overall well-being.

“I used to suffer badly from jetlag but now I get over it much more quickly, which is a huge plus”, she said. But because smoking wasn’t the cause of her sensational weight loss, it doesn’t mean that the golfer hasn’t struggled with the unhealthy habit, which she describes as her way of finding mental peace.
Charley Hull struggles in Olympic opener
Earlier this year, Charley Hull’s smoking habit made headlines. But when her Olympic women’s golf tournament teed off, Hull’s game was plagued by a different issue altogether. Hull shot 9-over-par 81 in the opening round of the 2024 Paris Olympics at Le Golf National in France in a disappointing start. Many wondered if her inability to stop smoking on the course was to blame. Not so, says Hull.
“It’s not the cigarettes,” she insisted. “I’ve been injured.” A shoulder injury, sustained from a slip while getting out of the shower, had left her sidelined for weeks. “I feel rusty,” Hull admitted. “I’ve only played one tournament since June.” But she’s optimistic about bouncing back. “Hopefully, I’ve shaken off the rust. Tomorrow, I’m aiming for 9 under.”
