Despite a recent dip in form, Justin Thomas remains one of golf’s most beloved figures, thanks to his brilliant strokeplay and unwavering connection with fans. His supporters, who have stood by him throughout his career, now have even more reason to appreciate the 15-time PGAT winner, as he has publicly advocated for enhancing fan engagement during PGA Tour events.

In a recent move, Thomas shared advice with the PGA Tour committee, emphasizing the need for greater interaction between players and fans. He pointed out that many fans may feel detached due to the lack of human connection during broadcasts. To address this, Thomas proposed that broadcast partners, such as NBC, CBS, and ESPN, should be given more access to players to create a more dynamic and engaging viewing experience.

Gabby Herzig highlighted Thomas’s initiative in a tweet that included a quote from his memo, obtained by The Athletic. It read: “I’m sure many of us feel the telecasts can be better, so let’s help them do that.” Thomas suggested incorporating player interviews between rounds as a way to provide interactive content that would captivate fans and enhance the overall broadcast experience.

His proposal isn’t just a solo opinion; he mentioned discussing these ideas extensively with fellow PGA Tour members Max Homa, Adam Schenk, and Mac Hughes, all of whom serve alongside him on the Tournament, Fans, & Sponsors PAC Subcommittee.

At first, it may seem like a promising idea. However, the fans don’t believe that Thomas has a clear picture of what they want to see. Let’s see what they had to say.

Have an interesting take?

It is clear that Justin Thomas is just trying to make the PGA Tour broadcast better for the fans. However, he doesn’t realize that most of the community doesn’t want the “walk and talk” session during tournaments. In fact, one of the users specifically said “Who can write back to Justin and say ‘walk and talks’ are horrible for telecasts and take away 15 minutes of live action?”. They don’t want to get distracted from the actual action on the course.

Another user shed light on a major issue: “He missed the ‘shot clock’… thats the only thing that’ll fix the broadcast”. They are definitely voicing the opinions of the entire golf community. Everyone has been frustrated with the PGA Tour’s terrible pace of play. One more fan had directly pointed out the problem. They said, “Fix the pace of play or none of it matters the actual watching experience is horrible!” They are suggesting that the PGA Tour should take a drastic step towards improving the pace of play.

Someone from the community had a special message for Thomas as they tagged the pro golfer in their post. They said, “The problem with golf is the coverage. You can never watch a golf tournament start to finish and you need about four subscriptions to even come close,” suggesting that the current approach towards broadcast is frustrating for the fans. Giving an example of how bizarre it actually is, they also added, “Imagine watching the NFL starting in the 2nd quarter then switching to peacock for the 3rd quarter.” It would be quite awkward to miss parts of an NFL game while splitting the rest of the game between two channels.

Lastly, there was one golf fan who was displeased with the new policy. They said, “How about you just give us back full-field tournaments with cuts? That’d be a nice start.” They don’t seem happy about the field size possibly being cut from 2026. What do you think about Justin Thomas’s email to the PGA Tour members?
