2007,David Puig left Joaquin Niemann’s Torque GC and joined Sergio Garcia’s Fireballs GC in December 2023. He was replaced by Carlos Ortiz, and well the decision was beneficial for both the players. “I think the trade made sense and obviously for me, just going to Sergio’s team was pretty much a dream come true,” said Puig after the shift. Ever since, Garcia has taken him under his wing.
The 2024 LIV Golf Team Championship is almost about to conclude with just the final round remaining. Sadly enough, the Fireballs GC could not make it to the Sunday round at Dallas. They went up against Cameron Smith’s Ripper GC, and despite the captain and Abraham Ancer putting up a good game, the team could not conquer the round.
David Puig went up against Australian player Lucas Herbert, who won six holes, and there was a tie for seven holes. This left Puig with just a one-hole difference. Nonetheless, Herbert won the round. Flushing It Golf took to their official X account and shared snippets from the ground after the pair had finished their round.

In the video, the 22-year-old was seen sitting in the corner upset. And Sergio Garcia was consoling him after a disappointing round. “The relationship between Sergio Garcia and David Puig has been fascinating to watch this year. He’s taken him under his wing and helped him so much in his career. David Puig will be a Ryder Cup player at some point, when all the off-course nonsense is sorted out”, read the caption.

Despite being taken under the leadership of one of the greatest golfers, looks like David Puig still has not been able to achieve the love and admiration of the golf world.
The golf community called the duo immature
David Puig joined Arizona State University in 2019 and started playing collegiate golf with the Arizona State Sun Devils men’s golf team. He also won the Southwestern Invitational two times in a row (2021, and 2022). He was then invited to the inaugural event of the LIV Golf series at Centurion Club, right after he turned pro in 2022. Seeing his performance, Greg Norman extended an invitation to the Spaniard to become a permanent member of the breakaway league.
He cut short his college career and accepted the invitation, opening the 2023 season. While this was a great milestone for him, Puig never played in the PGA Tour or the European Tour. As for LIV Golf, a lot of golf fans do not consider it an official league because of its format. Taking to this, one of them questioned, “When did he earn his way onto a real tour? How long will that take?”
David Puig represents the European team at the 2018 Junior Ryder Cup. This gives him the advantage of knowing the format of the game. However, with the 2024 season about to end, this will be his second season as a professional. Despite that, Puig has failed to acquire any wins so far. According to a fan, it will not be a very wise decision for the European team to make him a part of the event. They wrote, “Puig ain’t sniffing the RC anytime soon….if he does, Europe is already on the ropes”.
While another, replying to the Ryder Cup comment in the caption, simply wrote, “No he won’t.”

In the twelve appearances before the Individual Championship, Puig bagged only one top-10 finish at the Houston Tournament. This ranked him down to 26 on the leaderboard. Given that he began his career with the breakaway league, he has already been denied several benefits like acquiring the OWGR points. His performance mixed with his league has already dropped him down tremendously.
Taking to this, one of them curiously commented, “He finished 26th on LIV and is 128th in the datagolf rankings. I don’t understand the fascination with him.”
Sergio Garcia, despite his accolades in golf, is a love/hate player. Back in 2007 WGC-CA Champion, after a three-putt for bogey at the thirteenth hole, spat in the cup out of anger. Later on, he complained about bad luck on the course after dropping down the lead. There have been several such instances where he lost his calm.

This is why, he still receives a lot of hate from the golf community. Taking to this, one of them stated, “Under the wing of someone who has never grown up? Scary.” While another, not at all amused by the news, simply wrote, “Nobody cares.”
