Wyndham Clark found solace in Noah Lyles and Sha'Carri Richardson—are they the real MVPs of the PGA Tour?

“It’s epic. It’s so cool. I mean, it’s the pinnacle of sports.” In a few words, Wyndham Clark described his entire experience at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Although he did not conclude the event with any medal around his neck, the 1-time major winner had many good and a few bad memories from the French capital. The PGA Tour pro dived deeper into his Olympics experience in the Smylie Show podcast’s latest episode.

Clark explained he stayed no more than one night in the Olympic Village, which was not a pleasing experience. The Oregon alum was paired with Tennis pro, Marcos Giron, who blasted the AC all night, and he froze because of it. And how can one forget the infamous cardboard beds? Clark recalled, “Got to sleep on the cardboard bed, which was not great. It was awful.” The 3-time PGA Tour winner narrated a hilarious story that happened with Chris Ventura regarding the beds.

The Norwegian pro was struggling to sleep, so he was informed that there were two sides of the bed, one firm and one soft. He felt a sense of relief upon hearing that. But upon further investigation, it became apparent that it was the plush side that he couldn’t sleep on. Wonder how hard the firm side would’ve been?

In the end, the athletes adjusted to the beds and enjoyed the Olympics regardless of it. Even Clark recounted that, except for the beds, everything was fun for the pro. He said it felt like “it’s right back to college dorms.” Not just beds, but the bathroom conditions reminded him more of his college days, as seven or eight athletes had to share one.

In the end, Clark concluded, “that was really fun,” because he could watch other sports and enjoy the thrilling atmosphere at the Summer Olympics.

Amidst the adventurous night at the Olympic Village, coupled with the unpleasing experience, Team USA’s athletes were the few who became one reason for relief for the PGA Tour pro as he described the better part of his Olympic story. But meeting Sha’Carri Richardson and Noah Lyles was the highlight.

When Smylie Kaufman asked about the Olympics, Clark opened up about the better part of his journey too, which started with the opening ceremony. It was “the coolest experience I’ve ever been a part of,” said the 30-year-old, as he was fortunate to join the ceremony. Furthermore, he compared it to the Ryder Cup’s ceremony and declared it surpassed it as the Olympics has 1000 years of history and it felt amazing to be a part of it!

On the other hand, meeting with other celebrated athletes was the pinnacle of his Olympic experience, which kept his mind off the bad time. Kaufman asked Clark if he was Starstruck by any athletes, but the 30-year-old clarified that he was not. He recounted the athletes he could meet during the opening ceremony as they were on board and sailing through the River Seine. Clark met the two budding stars of the track and field, who won three medals for Team USA. He said, “We ran into Noah Lyles on the boat, Sha’Carri Richardson, we saw.” It would’ve truly been an expected encounter to have with the two fastest sprinters in America. However, something else also excited Clark. He was fortunate to reunite with Derek White.

White and Clark used to play basketball together as both grew up in the same area he revealed at the Smylie Show. After years, the PGA Tour pro was reunited with his childhood buddy as he was involved in a tête-à-tête with Devin Booker and Jimmer Fredette. Booker was amazed to know that Wyndham Clark and White knew each other. Not only him, the 30-year-old also met with Sabrina Ionescu. The two studied at the Oklahoma State University of Oregon.

As it seems, through thick and thin, Wyndham Clark enjoyed his stay at the 2024 Paris Games. So, when the LA 2028 comes around, he will surely be gearing up to get qualified and probably have a better experience in his home country!
