The year 2024 has started with a race for a 20 million-dollar prize purse among some of golf’s sharpest talents. Interestingly, as fans bite their nails instead of the increasingly intense competition, the golf world chatter has led to a war of words on social media.

This debate started due to a Twitter thread centered around a comparison between the courses chosen for LIV Golf events and the PGA Tour’s ongoing tournament, The Sentry 2024. As questions were raised regarding the difficulty level of the Kapalua Plantation golf course, fans on X were left tethered and forced into a tug of war. But what led to the golf world’s attention to this matter?

Well, it seems that the curiosity was based upon the results of the very first round of this four-day face-off between some of the world’s most polished golf talents. The first-round results have revealed that over five golfers were tied for the second position. Sharing the spot at T-2 after the first round were Collin Morikawa, Camilo Villegas, Sungjae Im, Jason Day, and Viktor Hovland.

All these players were able to shoot a solid eight-under-par score in the first round itself, whereas Sahith Theegala, who is currently leading the event, has a score of nine-under-par. This led to an exchange of suspicions over X, as a user seemed to raise concerns over the Kapalua Plantation golf course’s easy nature.

The netizen expressed views about a lack of concerns raised by the rest of the golf fraternity on this issue. They compared the situation to what would be the scenario if a similar scoreboard was reflective of an event by LIV Golf and pointed out the duality in calling out the golf course’s easy setup. Their exact words were, “If this were a LIV course, we’d hear a lot about how easy the course is set up.”

Interestingly enough, not everyone seemed to share a similar opinion to the one shared in the original tweet by the user and expressed their reservations about a comparison like this. Let’s see how the golf world exactly reacted!

The tweet led the golf world to take a turn into a divisive debate within the golf world, where some favored LIV Golf while others remained loyal to the PGA Tour. The question regarding the seemingly easy nature of the only par-73 golf course led to a heated debate between many fans and the users who tweeted originally.

Here are some of the reactions:

A fan was quick to contest the dichotomy drawn in the tweet and replied highlighting how the fact this is an easy course was an accepted fact long before LIV Golf was in the picture.

Another fan seemed to agree with the previous reply and talked about how the fact that the 18-hole golf course has always been as easy one is why they don’t like The Sentry.

Another user seemed to have even more bold opinions as they went to highlight how “no one cares about LIV.”

The format of the Saudi-funded league has always been under scrutiny by the fans. A seemingly PGA Tour fan posed the question of whether LIV Golf could draw crowds to the course for four days or not.

Yet another fan talked about their opinion on comparatively lower traffic for those watching LIV Golf and disagreed with the initial tweet.

One of the users was simple in their answer to the question. They did not shy away from not only rejecting the tweet’s validity by referring to LIV Golf as exhibition golf.

To this end, the person drawing this comparison in the first place staunchly expressed their views, held on to their initial position, and called the fan’s take “maniacal.”.
